I'm based in the Philippines but my GF is in Melbourne and I'm there alot (will migrate there in a few years time) and I've always wanted a 240.

 

was looking at 180sx's then I thought, since I wont be there for long (maybe a month and a half max for each visit) I'd get a 240z.

 

Now, I saw some 240z going for around 2k+ with stuff in it but mostly shoddy and old but with a bad engine. And a 260Z for 4k with everything running and minor rust. So its either of the two.

 

If I get the shoddy engine one I was thinking of an RB swap but registration would be killer so I'd probably go for an L28 and boost it.

 

And yes, if youre wondering, I will do the wangan midnight Z.

 

so I'll be here alot researching on them as we never had them here so I dont really know jack shit about them. Thanks lol

Welcome to the forums! The 260z sounds more bang for buck, even if it is 4k, minor rust can be repaired without completely stripping the car down to the bone.

 

What's your reasoning behind an RB conversion, out of curiosity?

Just thought I'd keep an RB in mind if the engine is badly shot up. But the 4k one is running with the l26 I believe.

 

Which from what I can remember can be boosted. :x although judging by your sig a high horse N/A is possible.

 

I've always loved the 240z look more though so I may change a bit with the 260. but for 4k I'm not complaining. I can use it too. Yeah I'll probably end up with the 260 cause well, the 240 is like for 29xx. And thats with a shot up engine and not so good body. whereas the 260 runs and all that.

 

Any idea how much it'd run me back to get the engine running really well? or possibly even boost it?

 

 

also well, I thought of the Rb as I saw on some sites it said they went for 750$

$750 for an RB? What RB is this? They don't really go that cheap.. Unless it's something shoddy like an old RB20.

 

You can easily replace the back 260z tail-lights for 240 ones, I think that's about the only major difference in terms of looks, unless you go and buy a 2+2 seater 260z, which obviously has a longer wheelbase (12").

 

I'm not exactly sure how much it would cost to get your engine running well or even boost it, but this is a forum and about 70% of the zed's on here have been in shoes, they'll tell you what's what soon enough. =]

My advice... buy... both of them. You stated its 4k for the 260z and about 3k for the 240z. Here in Australia they are both bargain prices and you'll clearly be purchasing just 1 at at least 8k. So the key is... buy them both use one has a donor car for the other. Sell off some parts if you have to because thats a steal of a price.

 

Pst! I've done a Wangan Midnight Analysis and it's actually a 260Z 2 seater with 240Z garnishes (in terms of S30Z). This is studying the old 93 real live action movie (clearly a 260Z) and the anime series(260Z interior and 240Z garnishes). Unless you can get your hands on a 65-67 S31Z with 240Z all-round garnishes, because thats the real devil Z.

 

Yes, RB for $750, does sound a bit unrealistic here in Australia, as mainly they go for 2-4k depending where you look and who you know. However if you go down the Wangan Midnight Boosted L28 route, i bid thee super luck and may you have bottomless money wells at your disposal. That engine i would believe to be in excess of $15000 just to even make. The key identical pieces would probably be the triple carbs and modifying that HKS 240Z surge tank, very hard to get. Not to mention a custom twin turbo manifold with a custom exhaust system to match.

 

But everything can be done if you have the right money, so the DevilZ can be built none the less.

I've seen a couple of these go up on Ebay, would definately require a bit of work to set up and probably not that reliable. The car was a Triple Weber Twin Turbo, probably high risk of detonation. I'm not sure what the huge fascination with the Wangan Midnight style is though. Its a cool car but not the best looking Zcar. That's just my opinion though .

I think it's just like any trend, Wangan Midnight anime and Maximum Tune 1, 2 and 3 arcade games has alot of influence on the teenage generation, that and the fact that the skylines are on there way OUT in terms of trend setting. *coughs* stupid fast and the furious *coughs*

Thanks guys. yeah it was an RB20 that I saw  so it was pretty old and beat up I suppose. Then again that 'RB20's starting from 750' may have just been there to lure me lol if budget permits I can probably buy both however the money I've got for a Z right now maybe enough for just one at the moment. (maintaining cars here too )

 

if not I'll probably end up with the 260 as atleast its running and all that. I'll try to get pics of that 240Z as I dont have that great of a feeling it could be a parts car. 

 

and well, if rb's go for around 2-4k I can probably save up for a while for that. Like lets say for my next visit I can just get that 260 I saw for sale (will have to drive it down from brisbane though I think) IF its still there. I read it runs fine and everything so I can still use it while I save for an engine or something for the engine.

 

and shit. lol 15 grand for the boosted l28 It doesnt have to be the exact exact replica. I've just always had a big liking for the Z and I kind of like that look. If you guys would know any other way I could go with the engine please do let me know as my budget on this isnt exactly sky high

Oh also, wouldnt really have to have crazy hp. As well,  with the strict rules there It'd be hard. I do however want to take it to a circuit track once it can run. I do circuit racing here and I saw the sandown raceway there and the road up to mount dandenong and I was sold.

ive picked up 3yrs ago a silver rb20det out of 93 r32 skyline for $1300 for front cut minus panels but did include rear brakes as well... though since than prices for rb20det has gone up. but u can still find a front cut for around 2K mark...

 

installing one will set u back few more expecialy if u paying someone to do it.... if u retain factory loom ecu and wiring its very easy to get it going after the mechanical fittment is sorted out..so no need for big bucks for aftermarket ecu... and expensive tuning time. and u can squeze a fair bit of hp on stock ecu out of rb20. with few add ons and reprogrammed ecu 220kw @ the rears is no issue.

 

other engine that is affordable now is the SR20det.. much lighter than rb and produces similar power with few add ons. but it is a 4cyl...

 

if u thinking budget probably one of these two motors or if u can find a relatively cheap VG series engine cheap from the importers i did see a VG30DET front cut as low as 1100 with auto..

 

again still cheaper than rebuilding the L series with some hp and they have been installed in s30 many times.

 

good luck with the purchase of the car and if u need any pointers for converting a rb20det or RB series engines into a zed let me know as i have converted mine myself.

I can vouch that a SR20DET or TT in a 260z, would own. It's quite an incredible engine for 4 cyl's.

As has been said, you dont need lots of power in a Z, for such a cheap, reliable, easy to get power from and relatively easy conversion, go an RB20DET. There is a bloke in Canberra with a 240Z RB20DET and it goes really well with very few mods and still flogs a lot of other cars on the road.  I would be spending the money on suspension if I were you, no point in having balls loads of torque and power when you will struggle to get it down.

that car is getting better and better. hes a good guy to know for pointers with issues of RB20DETs in s30. top bloke. i enjoy his stories vs other cars. also has lot of experience with s30 models.

 

 

i got rb20det vg30 turbo with 4.4 diff cv shafts etc...... on stock boost sure its lethal. i just cant wait to sort out the tiny bugs and let it realy rip on 1bar. i got slightly moded s14 and its a quick car. though my 260z with 0.65 bar stock boost will kill the s14 on the mid setting of 0.8bar.. though 1 bar on the s14 will kill it. Only till  the boost goes up on the rb before the tables should turn around once again.

 

S30 is  fairly light car any of these engines will dramaticaly improve over the stock. Aftermarket support for rb and sr is astronomical.
