Koni inserts in 240Z - Problem

Hi,

I'm trying to fit a pair of Koni 86 1812 inserts in the rear struts of my '72 240z but there seem to be some fitting issues that I need some help with.

 

First, the top section of the Koni shaft has a different profile to the standard one (see photo "A") which means that the top mount or isolator doesn't seat properly on the shaft. Should there be a spacer with the Koni to sit over the shaft?

 

Second, the gland nut supplied with the Konis doesn't match the thread of the strut housing so is no good, but the gland nut on the strut doesn't quite fit over the body of the strut (B and C in the pic, interferes by about .25mm).

 

Third, the strut body is also about 5mm taller so the gland nut will sit proud but I can live with that.

 

Now, I guess I can fix these with a little machining but I just wondered if anyone else has come across this before with Koni inserts. The part numbers seem to indicate I have the right parts but you never know...

With a little machining we managed to get the koni inserts to fit in the stuts OK.  A friend turned up some spacers to fit over the shaft and match up with the stut top isolators.

 

We then dialed in the gland nut to ensure it was centered and machined almost 40 thou from the ID to match the body of the Koni insert.

 

 

 

 

Quite straight forward in the end but I suspect that the Konis from new would have some with the required parts to fit.
