What fuel pump/pumps?

I have a question, this simple question has been answered many different ways throughout my research.

What fuel pump does the 260z have?

I've had a few different answers.

"Later 260z models have electrical"

"The 260z has both electrical and mechanica"

"The 260z has a mechanical pump"

 

The reason I'm asking this is because I've ran my car dry and i think I've blocked filters and lines. This has caused the car to only just idle because of contaminated fuel and restricting fuel.

I know it's rust because my fuel in a glass cup would look the same as beer..

I think it's cause by a 1/4 filled tank..previous owner and my bad :/

 

Anyway the point is what pump do I actually have? I can hear the electrical pump. if I have both should I replace the mechanical one too?

 

Sorry for stupid questions, I'm  16 and my age has only enabled me to start cert 1 this year.

240z and early 260z's all had mechanical pump (mounted above alternator). And later 76-77 i think had both mechanical and an electric pump. I know all the s30's had the electric fuel pump  wiring regardless of whether or not they had one installed from factory. Its to prime the lines

 

If your car is carb, you can run one or the other and do not require both. Does your car have the mechanical pump (round thing located above alternator and near sparkplug lead 1 with hoses connected to it? )

Later 260Zs with the electric pump have an internal filter too.

 

 

It's pretty easy to tell, the mechanical one hangs off the right hand side of the head.

Your 260Z unless its an early 74/75, should have an electric pump at the rear. If you hear one ticking then its an electric one. There should only be one pump fitted. If you have a round mechanical one fitted opposite the distributor, remove it and put a blanking plate there. No need for two pumps! If you want to flush it, remove the line before the filter and just turn the ignition on for a while and place a glass container to catch the dirty fuel.

Well that is what confuses me. Mine is a 75 and it has electric because it clicks..

Can't rember because it's been at my mates place for 5 months after we moved. I didn't take any notice if it had a mechanical one because I heard the electrical one.

 

In built  filter? Like in the pump, or ?

Filter was usually mounted near your carbon canister on the drivers side between the rad support panel and strut tower. It has a metal clip to hold it and that's bolted to the side of the engine bay. Look for the fuel lines running along the chassis rails and they bend up and then you'll see it.

Car sitting for mnths you say?

Tank mst likely 35 years or so old?

Fuel filter in engine bay?

A clck clck clicking on gnition n?

 

Electric in rear,

Tank has rust flakes, line nto pump partially blcked

Fuel pump tiny filter screen ( internal -of fitted?) blcked!

 

Empty tank, remve, put in a handfull f nuts and bolts, hold upside down, and shimmy shake side to side and for and aft. In both the high bit, and low bit.

Bit f fuel, slsh, empty, shake out nuts/bolts, repeat.

Fit tank.

Fit filter between tank and pump,,

Pull ff inlet/outlet to pump, gentle air pressure from Outlet side, to blw out crud, refit lines.

 

Disconnect at carby end, put container under hose,

Turn on gnition, it should fill a 1 litre container in around 2 minutes, maybe less.

Reconnect primed line, run car.

 

Be prepared to replace filter between tank and pump a few times. Use a clear see through pladtic filter, to check for crud.

No need for engine bay filter.
