Please give me feedback and advice on my patch pannel welds.

Im trying to set up my Mig Welder to weld some holes in my firewall and fix some rust. I did a test patch, im using 1.0mm sheet.

Welder is a 205a WIA Mig.

Settings are on LO, with fine voltage set to 7.5 out of 9 and wire speed at 1.5 out of 10.

To weld im holding gun dead straight, about 1cm from pannel, and tacking, waiting to cool, and doing another tack. I hold the trigger for only 1 second.

What im finding is when i lay the next tack, as you can see, i do get penetration, but the penetration of the welds arnt joined together, even though im laying the front tacks close together.

Any advice? I tried upping the fine voltage to around 8.5, but it didn't really help with penetration, much the much, should i hold the trigger longer when i tack it? or should i then go around and tack from the opposite side to fill the gaps?

lean the torch over on an angle, not towards one of the plates, but either pull or push away from last tack.

Dont be afraid to leave the trigger on for a moment longer, and pull the the weld if only 3-5mm, but not too long or youll get too hot and the weld will fall through.

youll get to the practice stage where you can pull/push a 10mm long weld (after tacking and flushing of course)

give it a go on more test plates, youll have nothing to loose.

While voltage is important I find wire feed is more so. Wind the wire feed back until its barely continuing the arc, this way you get good penetration but minimal fill and less grinding.

That's pretty good Rudolph, you will not get perfect penetration on all the tacks with a mig, it looks pretty close. Remember that Datsun steel is thinner at 0.8 so it is easy to blow a hole. You might have to back the volts/wire feed off a touch when you step down to 0.8.

Cheers
