modular9 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Sold the rb30 to have some fun with triples/exhausts and L28's ( still to find ). It is all Sulio's fault. I have got my hands on a full-ready-to-go triple dhla 40 dellortos with manifold ,linkage yadda yadda. ( yep there will be piccys and so forth ) Good deal that has left me a little money to upgrade things. I have a few questions I hope some of you more knowledgeable types can help me out with. I am replacing my fuel pump anyway ( noisiest bugger i have ever heard!) but with the arrival of the triple dello's i am thinking i need to rethink the fuel system. Are they like webers and need a constant fuel pressure? If so can someone help me out with what that figure might be. I have been thinking about a holley red ( blue being too ridiculous for a n/a car ). Going to be replacing the fuel hosing with higher spec hosing as well. Ram tubes and oiled foam elements as well? Have I missed anything ? Sulio : any tricks in getting your setup running? I am also about to book the car to have some headers put on with exhaust system ( full ) I am thinking 2 1/4 inch system with some free flowing mufflers as well. Or do i need to go bigger ? I am a firm believer in getting the breathing right as well. I dont necessarily want to make a statement, i am after performance Quote
Toecutter Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 I have them ready to bolt on but not going to put em on until after the November cruise. Hey Modular I can't remember your location but if your in Vic I can lend you the HOW TO TUNE DELLS AND WEBERS book I have, can't remember the authors name but it is very handy. Cheers, Sulio Quote
JP240z Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 ah yes... i remember when i was once that excited about tuning my tripple delortos. the tripples have almost beaten me : ( Quote
modular9 Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 Sulio : I am up in QLD but that is ok i'll have a look on ebay for a book on the triples. Hmm so it's hard to tune a set of triples? You have a l28 with a 240 head dont you ? I have been thinking that finding a cheapy l28 and rebuild with the triples on it then drop in replacing the l26 is a more intelligent use but i want the triples! JP240z : Selling the rb30 engine I was going to put in , so i might use the funds from that to pay someone to do it. I know it is a cop out but SU's and Holleys are relatively easy but triples sound hard. I'll have a look see. Did you sacrifice a few goats and wear a pink rubber glove on your left foot while you were tuning them ? I heard that this is normal tuning behaviour Mike Quote
620Z Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Hey Modular9 I have a holley blue fuel pump on my car since I have a V8 I need it. Anyway yeah they are noisy bastards. A heads up it all comes down to how and where you mount it. Mine was originally mounted on my fuel tank so it made a hell of a racket. finally moved it to the moustash bar and also mounted it using rubber cromets to absorb the vibration and noice. Before this it used to vibrate and the hurmonics would run through the whole car. JP240Z I hear so many people having troubles tuning triples. Everyone reckons they know what to do but the truth is there are not that many people around who can properly tune them especially for the road. I could put you on to someone in Melbourne but not sure where you are located. Persist with it since you have spent all that cash but spend a little more for some dyno time with someone who knows what they are doing. Quote
JP240z Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Haha yeah I wish it was only "a little more" for dyno time. The last joint I rang up quoted me $1200 to set up tripples on the dyno. But yes Modular9 I would definately recommend that if you have the leftover cash to get them tuned professionally then do it, before your carbs make you lose your enthusiasm for your zed. Quote
modular9 Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 Craig : I actually unbolted the orig fuel pump, put on some rubber grommets on it and remounted on the 'tache bar like you did but it is still noisy. But then I tried it without mounting it and i could hear it about 20 meters away quite nicely over the exhaust! I also think i am currently loosing pressure to the SU's so the orig pump is probably dieing anyway. So the holley blue isnt over kill then ? JP240z : make me lose enthusiasm ? not a snowballs chance in hell of that happening. I still hug my car before i take it out on the road. $ 1200 seems a lot but there's a mob up here who were going to charge me 800 odd for tuning the twin SU's so praps it is about it. The Dellortos i got were tuned for an l24 in a 260 which is pretty close to what i have now so fingers crossed it will be bolt on and go ! I kill me ! Quote
JP240z Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 do you have the details eg jet sizes and that? ive been looking for someone with a similiar set up to me to see if i could get some approximate settings but the ones I have got are hopeless. I've got a warm L24. Quote
modular9 Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 I'll have a look when they came in. The guy who sold it to me told me that they were jetted for an l24 to l28 in fact in his words "They are jetted for a L24 to L28 engine. Fine tuning might be required on larger engines. The intake is complete with the linkage and has been ported to match a typical intake gasket. Also included is a set of mounting gaskets." Considering that my l26 has a warm cam and will have extractors and exhaust, I should be ok. I have a friend who looks after alfa's up here so he said he can come around and try a few things and help with jetting etc. My main prob i think is providing fuel for the wee beasty's. The rb30 is sold so money is in a tin for a dyno run or 2 . I am gonna start one of those build up threads on here when the beasts arrive. Problem for me is that other than engine mods/suspension mods everything else is perfect. Then I want a l28 and a manual tranny ( auto's really suck ! ) Quote
620Z Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I only use a Holley Blue fuel pump because I have an 825cmf carby on my V8. So triples might be a little different and not require as much fuel. Check on that. But mine used to be as noisy as yours at one point. It drove me crazy. Over time and a few mounting changes seemed to do the trick for me. But yeah I know how an untuned car or even noisy fuel pump can dampen your enthusiasm from driving your car. After spending all that cash sometimes it's hard to find that little bit extra to make everything perfect. But it's worth it. Persistance pays off. Quote
modular9 Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Thought i might resurrect this thread rather than post all over the place ! I now have the triples in my hot sweaty and hairy hands. And they are better than described. I have done a small check on all the relevant things and they are matched and the linkage is good.Have yet to tear em down and replace things but the seller was good enough to include 3 rebuild kits. He said i wouldnt likely need them but since he is going EFI he doesnt need them himself . I have gone out and got me a holley blue. Used one on my 302 clevo and never looked back but... One question with the holley blue will I need to have the mechanical pump on the front of the engine as well? The guy at autobarn had to come outside to see this Z with 2 fuel pumps as he didnt beleive me i had 2. He reckoned i should be able to get away with the one holley so... I thought I'd post here as you guys would most likely know better. Now gotta track down a blanking plate on the off chance it is good to go . Thanks for reading ! Quote
620Z Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 you won't need two Pumps with a Holley Blue. I don't run out of fuel pressure on the track running full stick with the 825cfm. So you should be OK. Instal a pressure guage with the one pump (plus your regulator) and you will know where you stand. Pretty silly to have two if not needed. Think of the weight. Ha. Can always put it back on if required but I would be surprised. I do know people who run two but not with a Blue. Have fun. Quote
Toecutter Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 keep us posted ont he tripples. Mine are still sitting there waiting to be bolted on. Maybe next weekend!? Sulio Quote
modular9 Posted November 20, 2007 Author Posted November 20, 2007 thanks for the headsup Craig. I was a little reticent in sticking in a nice pump and then using the mechanical one as well. Simplifies things as well. Sulio : ahh my car is in the smah repairs right now as a little girl in a suzuki crap box went into the back of it . (not too bad damage to my car but hers ... ) I am also getting my new exhaust done after i get the car back . 2 1/4 exhaust. then Fuel delivery then triples. Keep us posted on yours as well. Quote
Toecutter Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Just in case you decide to bolt them back on. Very happy with mine, running them on the settings below: 2746_.pdf Quote
