grimlynsan Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 If anyone has one of these or knows where I can get one new or what type of Aussie delivered cars I could check at the wreckers I'd be most thankful. Thanks for looking, Lee Quote
Riceburner Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 I might have a spare used red gear. Gimme a few days and I'll get back to you, I bought my new one from Nissan in Melbourne. Quote
d3c0y Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 FWIW nissan USA were cheaper for the 4.4 speedo drive. Quote
grimlynsan Posted August 19, 2013 Author Posted August 19, 2013 Thanks guys. Can either of you confirm the availability of the carrier? All the research I have done has led me to believe that this is very hard to get as when you order the part from nissan, their parts machine defaults to a different part which doesnt fit due to the offset cog (or something like that!). Can anyone confirm if the 4.1 cog will fit with my series II 280zx box? Or, if my research is correct, you do infact need a new carrier? And has anyone ever managed to get this carrier? I'm getting more and more confused the more I look into it... I'm working off this information which I dug up: For the use of a 4.11 rear gear ratio differential (and higher), be sure to verify that the correct sleeve is ordered if your currently do not have one available. The Nissan parts department computer will default to PN 32707-78000 when PN 32707-66300 is ordered (been there – done that). The sleeve for the 20 tooth and higher pinion gear/cogs has an offset center to account for the larger pinion gear cog head. The cog head is larger to accommodate a higher number of teeth cut into the head to maintain the proper spacing to mesh with the transmission. Information on the two sleeves is as follows: Sleeve Assembly (16 tooth-19 tooth) PN 32707-78000 Sleeve Assembly (20 tooth-23 tooth) PN 32707-66300 (may no longer be available through Nissan) But I also found info that says: NOTE: There are 2 different aluminum cog "sleeves", a '75-80, and '81-83 with different cog "offsets". If you look closely in the picture above notice how the red cog is offset slightly to the right, and the blue to the left. This means you must keep the sleeve with the transmission it came in, and only swap the cog. Otherwise the cog may not mesh the proper way inside the trans. The weird one is the larger red 4.11 cog which requires a later ZX sleeve to fit into the older '77-'80 trans. But will the red cog fit into a later 280b? I don't believe so since the red cog is much larger than the white. So I'm using a white cog on my 4.11 rear which makes my speedometer read 10mph fast. D3c0y, you're running a 4.3 - what box are you running? And from where did you source your carrier, if indeed you needed to source one? http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/attachments/misc-s30/1978d1051876395-speedometer-gear-datsun-comp.-speedo-pinion-info-1.jpg Quote
d3c0y Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I'm getting both from Courtesy Nissan in the states, no problems with the part numbers. Quote
mjfawke Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Take existing carrier, take to a machine shop, have additional slot cut at 180 degrees from existing slot. Or get one from an Auto box or from one of the other Nissan boxes that had the locating tang on the opposite side. Quote
grimlynsan Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 As an update for future readers, I ordered both the red cog and the carrier from Everything Nissan in the States and got the following response, after having written 'DO NOT SUBSTITUTE WITH PN 32707-78000' on my order: PN 32707-78000 That is the part number that it supersedes to the number that you order is no longer available. The order is on hold. The credit card that was used did not pass our verification process. The transaction has been voided. We will need to collect payment either pay pal or wire transfer. The order is on hold. So I will either 1. Look to order the red cog again (not sure where from yet) and then modify my existing carrier following mjfawke's instructions. 2. I have heard you can put some kind of universal speedo adjuster inline somewhere between the gearbox and the speedo. Has anyone tried this? (I haven't looked into it yet). Option 2 seems easier and cheaper if such a device exists... Will need to look into this. Lee Quote
Riceburner Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 I have done the mod listed as option 1. Takes about 10mins with a dremel and is quite easy to do Quote
grimlynsan Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 Thanks for your post - that sounds easy (and cheap!). I'll have to get on to ordering the speedo cog and will just get my existing carrier modified to take it as per the dremel method. Thanks to all who replied. Lee Quote
d3c0y Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 I can get you the link to the Nissan dealer that is ordering mine in if you like? I didnt have any trouble and have bought heaps of stuff off these guys. Quote
grimlynsan Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 thanks D3c0y that would be most helpful! I am (hopefully) picking up the zed with newly installed 4.1 NISMO LSD this afternoon! Can't wait! Typically, my 'while I'm at it syndrome' caused me to also get all my braided brake lines installed and those bump steer spacers installed too... which is why it wasn't a drive in drive out affair - also the diff I imported was missing some bits which needed to come off my existing one, plus new seals were required too. I shudder to think what else will need bolting on by the time the red cog arrives... I have spent way to long drooling at the techno toy website... Oh well, until then, I guess I'll just have to drive at the same speed as everyone else and assume they are not speeding... (I dont have a GPS to measure speed). Lee Quote
