Another front to rear sump swap

When I bought this 2.4 out of a skyline the fact it had two dipstick tubes made me think it had to be a 240z block first.

This is what i found with the sump off, the middle oil boss has a hole which tapers and no  bolt holes for the oil pickup

I've got a 240z rear sump and pickup to go on.

 

Front pickup has deeper hole, guessing the rear  is still blocked

 

Can some one tell me what has to be done now.

Is there a oil gallery down here do I just drill down till I strike oil?

If a hole has to be drilled into an oil gallery then the whole motor has to be stripped down to the block and gallery plugs removed so that it can be cleaned out properly. Once it's all stripped and the plugs removed it will be obvious what has to be done.

steve, I have done this mod,

best thing to do is modify/extend the oil pick up rear ward.

saves getting any metal shavings in the oil lines/gallerys and somewhere you dont want it to get to, ie oil pump

moving the dipstick is the easy part, but you need to use the zed pan or cut'n'shut to modify to suit.

 

Just be careful of the extension of the picup, as you have limited space to direct the new 'add-in' piece.

you need to consider sump the block clearance, its not ridiculously tight but you need to be mindfull of angle/routing diametr etc etc.

also the pic up end/screen needs to be off the bottom of the sump, to avoid starvation, especially if there is a dent put in the sump later on.

I mulled over this motor all day,Nate your right about the extended pickup it's no easy cut and shut the inside of a Zed pan gives hardly any clearance.

 

If I'm right the middle pickup is the start of the oil gallery, Its already drilled to the right depth just needs the hole bored out to reveal side gallery, so line will go middle pickup to front pickup to oil pump then on to filter and oil circuit?

If its a straight line between middle and front pickups surely I'll have a good chance of catching the swarf.

i just wouldnt chance it on a steel block, ally block arent so bad as the oil pump will much/crush an alloy shaving and spit it into the oil filter, (if small / thin enough)

Swarf will ALWAYS be on the back of the hole, TRUST me, drill a hole as best you can in a 3mm Steel plate, there is no way of doingso without having a burr/swarf laying around which can either now or later end up in the oil pump. pump may score the housing and rotor/vanes but can easilly snap the pump drive shaft.

 

The oil pickup mod, with a tube bender is the best option,

Ive done it a few times and worked the best with the least amount of 'professional' involvement.

have a closer look before you break through into the oil gallery.
