Uni Holidays are soon approaching (as of tommorow) and ill be back onto my 260z.

hunting for power out of my 260z using an rb25 has gone astray (as i bought a s13 with SR for fun). so im Focusing more on the handling side of things...

Ive decided to revert back to the old l28. and im considering to run a turbo setup (so its gets up and goes) .

So...

Is it still possible to find L series turbo items easily, such as :

-turbo exhaust manifold;

-water and oil lines;

-turbo dizzy;

-ECU and wiring harness.

-p90 head

And how much would I be looking at for them?

i know its possible to use NA bit and pieces here and there, and ive read up on all the work involved etc..

Does anyone want to swap out there l28 turbo/parts for an rb25det??  ;D as ive now got one sitting in the shed haha

Any help of where I could find these items or sourcing these from overseas would be big help.

cheers

I have used a z31 dizzy and modified it to fit the L28(to work with new ecu), I use a f54 block n42 head, standed ecu, electronic dizzy that is locked. my head has larger valves and a slight port. I run 12-14 psi using a rising rate fuel pressure reg and have no issues and it pulls like a train it is also not intercooled. my new setup has a holset hx35w turbo, 555cc injectors, megasquirt 3 ecu, and dizzy from a z31 that is modified to fit a L28

To be honest it's probably not going to be a whole lot more to put an RB25 in these days.

-turbo exhaust manifold; Yes, around $150 seems to be a regular price? or very plentiful in the states

-water and oil lines; Fabricate them, easy as.

-turbo dizzy; not too difficult, pretty easy out of the states. make sure you get the splined dizzy shaft to match

-ECU and wiring harness.go aftermarket, you'll appreciate it a LOT more if you can save up the extra cash, otherwise look for someone wrecking a 280zx for the loom, then get the turbo ECU from the states

-p90 headkeep your eyes open, they are around but sell quick, otherwise you can get them out of the states

Obviously postage from the states can get very expensive, also look on yahoo japan, parts seem to be a bit more expensive than the states but the shipping is usually a lot more reasonable.

yup, about the same cost/effort and some would say more reliable.

Does the n42 ping much??, ive read arguements over using the n42 head for turboing and no one seems to have a definate answer haha...

Does the Z31 Distributor need to be from a turbo engine aswell??

How would you compare your original setup to stock L28e injected?

Depends if you have dished pistons on it or not. You wouldnt want flat top pistons and an N42 with a turbo.

I know its not much more to get an RB Swap, but since getting a silvia as my daily, i wanted to go stay old school with the 260z (Im 20 so l28's seem old to me hehe  :D)

also upon hearing a mildly modded L28 few weeks back, the exhaust note was heavenly  ::)  haha

those reasons sound pretty lame but meh...

the engine I have definately has dished pistons.

Trust me i get it, i just built an L28.

You know an L28 with a turbo wont sound the same as a non-turbo one right?

Probably wont sound the same at high Rpm, but at Idle and low Rpm should be fairly similar (hopefully haha)

If you're going aftermarket ECM, don't worry about the L28ET dizzy, just use your existing dizzy. If using Mega Squirt (probably easiest), use it to trigger the ECM (lock it out), and then use the ECM to trigger the coil for timing control. Alternatively you can use a GM ignition module from a dizzy vehicle (I'd have to find out which cars in Aus came with a similar ICM to what I used), that can work as both a trigger to the ECM and allow timing control, triggering the coil.

Better yet, grab a DIS set-up, IIRC the Holden VN(?) is a popular donar, fab a trigger wheel and have wastespark DIS. This can also be interfaced with an MS.

Personally I use a Delco ECM, from a Pontiac Sunbird.

If you do your research right, the only part "needed" from an L28ET (maybe L20ET would work as well) is the exhaust manifold. I turbo'd my L28 (NA) and the only OEM L28ET parts I used were the exhaust manifold and the cam cover, and I only put the cam cover on, because I got a good deal on one.

As much as I like my turbo L28, if I already had an RB25, I'd likely swap that in. In the end I plan to swap my L28 out for a 3.5L V6, that's I've had in the garage for longer than I've owned my car. lol

I get no pining at all with my n42 and ive run upwards of 14psi non intercooled, also a L28et sound nothing like a NA L28 only the idle is the same, all you can here is turbo spooling and a lot of it I have no idea what it sound like out of the car though. parts still can be found but they are getting harder to find, it would almost be cheaper to put a rb25det in but its no where near as cool as a L28et and the torque is very nice
