Hi,

I have an issue which developed yesterday that I am keen to fix urgently as it will prevent me from meeting up with everyone at Falls Creek on Sat if I do not sort it.

I am hoping someone here may be able to provide advice that could speed up the diagnosis/rectifying of the issue.

On my way home from work yesterday I noticed the indicators had ceased functioning and the temp, fuel, oil pressure and amp gauges had also stopped working.

Got home and checked the 20 amp fuse for the indicators etc had blown.

Replaced fuse and it kept blowing, pretty much as soon as I turned the ignition on,  head lights and wipers still work however. Unfortunately I had another work commitment last night so didn't get to pull anything apart and search for problem.

As stated above it will be greatly appreciated if anyone could pass on any info into similar problems they may have had that could speed up the search and fix process. I am leaning towards a problem with the indicator switch itself as the probable cause?

Thanks

Regards

Peter.

I'm going to say that one of the positive wires on a globe has become disconnected and is earthing out. Unplug indicators at the front and taillights at the rear and then install a new fuse. Connect one at a time until the fuse blows to find the suspect device!

Thanks for the advice so far. I have checked it again and the fuse blows as soon as you turn the ignition on, the amp gauge goes all the way negative and the fuse blows.

I have disconnected the back indicators but would the fuse blow just when the ignition was turned on if it were a problem at the bulb - given that the indicators are not on so therefore the way I see it they are not getting any power at that point?

I must admit I don't know much about this so please correct me if I have it wrong.

Update,

Problem now sorted, Pauly the Datsun Whisperer came over and we pulled it all apart. Wasn't the indicators, wasn't the oil pressure, temp, amp or fuel gauge. The last thing we tried was the connection at the back of the tacho. Pauly pulled that off and the fuse stopped blowing (good thing he is small and flexible enough to get under there). Put it back together carefully and it all works again.

The fun of 40 year old cars I guess.

I am concerned it may happen again but will just have to keep an eye on it. At least I now know what to look for.

Thanks to all for advice,

Big thanks to Pauly.

Now fingers crossed I will see the members attending Halliday in Bright on the weekend.

Regards

Peter

Just saw this thread now... I was going to say one common fault are the wires that are soldered to the switches sometimes come off and short themselves.. But obviously it wasn't that!

Great work finding that one!
