Hi guys, Well after taking my head to 2 machine shops and having it inspected it is pretty much beyond repair. So I'm after a reco N42 head or one in good condition if complete with valves and all the gear ready to bolt up (minus cam) then even better. Can contact me at alking@internode.on.net with pricing photos etc that would be great. Thanks Al

Well looks like a full disassemble it is! I've got the correct manual and all tooling just got to purchase the new parts (bearings, rings etc) I think I might as well just do a full rebuild the way it's going.... Thank you all for you help. Hope I can get her back on the road soon! Cheers Al

Thank you all for your input and suggestions. I was wondering the same if the water journals were being blocked as well from the gasket and it appears they are blocked on the block as well. Any good suggestions I how to clean the journals and general clean up of this oil coolant sludge mix in the block and journals?? Ive never done this before. As for the head defiantly will be getting it cleaned skimmed valve stem seals done and maybe the valve guides. I'll see how much it comes to. And of course a pressure test to check for cracks or warping. And a head gasket done. Any further suggestions?? Thanks all for your help!

Hi guys, Apologies Ive been learning a heap on the website of recent times so please be gentle….. I'm no mechanic so i may get the wording wrong... Ive been looking everywhere around the net for resources on this and just wanted everyones 2 cents worth. I have a L28 with N42 head and F54 block. The motor was running fantastic recently till white smoke started to blow continuously from the rear end with occasional puff of blue smoke. So the usual culprit …….head gasket..?? Pulled the head off to inspect the gasket and start on a refresh of the head etc. But before i go ahead with it or decide to pull her out and rebuild her i wanted your opinions. Her are some photos of her. No tears in it i can see 3rd cylinder with coolant and "sludge" in it sorry for the bad photo. I have had coolant getting into the 3rd cylinder (indicated by the clean pistons 3rd and 4th cyl compared to the others) and that was indicated on the CR test i ran on her (see last photo of inside 3rd cylinder). She was down to 105 compared to the others at 120+ and i noticed that in the week leading up to it blowing smoke, i did start go through coolant but there was no white smoke to be noticed at that stage. Also i wanted to see what everyone thought of the "yellow sludge/gunk" that seems to be around the back water jacket/gallery and in the various ports on the block and head gasket…. is this common and is it corrosion??? My thermostat housing has the sludge in it too but the thermostat itself was clean as a whistle.. Of course it sounds like I'm going to need to do a flush of all the coolant system which i was planning anyway. So if the head gasket wasn't the problem what could be causing the above problems…. Apologies for the wording of my post I'm no mechanic….. Thanks for your time and help and valued info. Al

Al and Jason, Thanks for the info heres how the engine is set up now: I gave her a quick tune using and as i thought the SUs had gone out of balance and were running slightly rich. And what it was like before with the K&Ns While i was in the bay i gave the air cleaner another coat of Chev orange…… Thanks again and ill see how i go with a dyne tune as I'm looking at the weber conversion in the coming months. cheers al

Hi guys Thanks for all the good info I'll check the filter clearances with the horns. I did find last night a fouled #4 cyn spark plug only all the rest were spot on so I'll be replacing it tonight and giving it another run. All other issues like float bowl heights are all good and the bowls are clean of debris. I only had adjusted the single idle screw that's located on the throttle linkage above the carbies that's all. I use the BPR6ES NGK SPARK PLUGS with NGK leads and have found them to be excellent. Ill whack the stock filter again and see how she runs..... Thanks for your help guys! Cheers Al

Hi Guys Not sure if it's in the right section.... Here goes: Engine is L28 with twin SU (3 screw type) and stock air box Just installed the following: - 5/16 AN5 steel braided fuel lines from fuel rails to carbies - a pair of SU air horns from MSA - dual K&N round type filters (replacing stock air box and filter) - vent cover K&N filter. - new ryco fuel filter - the crankcase vent is still vented to the manifold. - new chromed dash pot covers (with original dampners from the dashpots) - float bowl vent hoses tied down to side of float bowls. Everything else remains stock. Here's a similar photo of my set up: Now I have a idle problem. Once it warms up on choke it idles but hunts between 700-1200rpm and if I give it some throttle it sometimes drops off and stalls. When I first turned on the ignition to turn on the electric fuel pump to check the hoses some fuel did come out the air intake on the rear SU carb but stopped after about 10 secs or so and was only a little bit of fuel. So I tapped the float bowl as this is usual symptom of float needle being stick due to debris. I adjusted the top idle screw on the throttle body so it would idle around 1000rpm and stay running. I had seen on other forums that when you do this mod you need to adjust the floats in the carbies...?? So do I need to retune the carbies now because of the setup ie fuel to air mixture?? Any help would be appreciated. I'll be replacing all the vacuum hoses first just to make sure it's not that problem. Here's a pic of as similar setup as mine. I'll get photos of mine in the next 24 hors.

Hi guys, Well a update. A fellow collector of 240z's contacted me a while back in September and had this following car for sale. I've purchased a clean silver 73 240Z from Coffs Harbour- from a fellow Zed enthusiast that owned 4 at one stage. Chassis HS301101278. With a L28 in the front of her. As the Zed community is quote small if anyone has any info on this car or knew the person who did the upgrades /resto work on her id love to hear about the history. This Zed was restored from the ground up some stage ago and the mechanical side of it is in top notch the previous owner didn't do the restoration he purchased it from another gentleman from Brissy. Mods to her include: -L28 with a F54 block with s/s valve seats -280Zx 5 spd gear box -280z distributor -dual core aluminium radiator with thermo fans -Hilux Disc brakes with upgrade M/C - H4 headlight upgrade The body is reasonable except for a dint in the front right fender and a little bit of surface rust under the passenger and drivers seat which will be taken care of first thing! The respray- not so good… acrylic re spray that was never cut or polished so that will be on the cards right away as well… but thats the fun part! A bit of a tidy up and tune and she will be off to get registered in the new year most likely. Plans for her include: -Triple Webber's -Kamaeri Air Dam -2 pac re-spray -Replace bumpers with Euro style bumpers (no rubbers) -16X7 Rota RB wheels in gunmetal grey -Strut upgrades to front and rear. -New K&N air filter and carby air horns (while i save up for the webbers) Heres some quick photos and glad to be back behind the wheel of a Zed! Any hints or tips OR history please go right ahead and let us know as its my first 240z. As you can see from above i had a 260z 2+2…. so quiet different indeed. Thanks for looking Cheers Al Excuse the dogs toy sitting next to the cari nthe final photo -

Congrats Gav! Well done on the purchase. Really looking forward to your thread and I'm in the same boat- just bought a silver 240z and the paint work is less than desirable but the mechanics and L28 are A1 and more and I'm looking at doing a vintage style racer like the "dare to be different" 240z video on YouTube. Best of luck mate and enjoy! Al -
Thanks for the replies guys. Do rota do them in 0 offeset do they?? Cheers Al

Hi Guys, Im sorry to be asking a question that has been asked many times before but I've trolled through the threads and found definitive answer. I finally purchased a 240Z yesterday first thing ill be doing is replacing the wheels and tyres and giving her a good cut and polish! ……..So the setup I'm looking at doing is ROTA RB Hyper blacks 15X7s +20 (standard wheel form Rotas website) with 225/50 R15 wheels all round. Im going for a similar look to this silver Z. So will this work on a standard setup 240z no guards flared etc… Thanks Al
