Hi Toby Thanks for the info. I didnt try Nissan as I tried the usual parts retailer (supercheap, Bursons, Repco etc). Who do you suggest as online resellers? Are any of them local as I am trying to get the dash reinstalled over Christmas holidays

HI When I bought my Orange 140z I noted that the heater core was bypassed I decided that when I have my dash out I would investigate fixing the heater. Now that I do I have noted that not only did the previous owner bypass the heater box they removed the Heater control valve and 3 hoses. I understand it could be difficult getting original hoses and heater control valve? Are there any local options for these or are there any other options for the hoses and Heater control valve that could be adapted under the dash? THanks in Advance Chipp

HI All While I had my dash out swapping in my reskined dash I thought I would check and repair all of my guages. I noted that my clock wasnt working. (Even in my second Zed). I undersand that most of the time they just need a clean and lubricate. I had a look inside but after investiagation it looks like one of the pendulums is missalligned as one end appears to be popped out of its mount. I have noted both of my clocks have the same problem. Iam after some advice on options to get these fixed and whether it is worth it? Thanks in advance Chipp

While stripping my car down to prepare for body work I have sureprisingly found that my 240z drivers side door doesnt have a side intrusion bar inside. Does have anyone have a 240z door or side intrusion bar. The door doesnt need to be perfect I just the side intrusion bar. Thanks in Advance

Thanks anyway. I noticed you were after a 240z strut tower covers. I dont have any spare and if you cant find any I have mine off the car. If you are heading odwn this way I can get them out so you cant trace them.

Here is the photo of the RH one still on the car. and here is the photo of the broken housing (Passenger). You can see where the bolt has pulled through the bottom

My 240z front left indicator housing has broken where the bolt has broken through the bottom of the housing. Does anyone have one of these laying around they dont need for sale or know where I could obatin one? Also if I cant find one are there any other options like repros? Thank you in Advance

This was my thoughts.

At the moment they are only just bubbles, There is no rust holes that I can see. I was thinking to get them to check these areas look at the floors and rails (impact damage), repair the vinyl roof and dents repaired. My concern is that I would end up opening up Pandoras Box.
-
Thanks for the feedback. I definetly will get the repairer to use use a bucket load of internal frame coating to slowdown further rust development. For me I think is a better option than removing the sills and sand blasting.
-
Yes for me it is about the driving experience.
-
This is what I was thinking repair the known rust issues, remove the vinyl roof and dents, Make it look good and get out and have fun with it. I also recognise that there is hidden rust in an unrestored Z and if the project.
-
Yes I definetly have no issues with going back to bare metal in those areas and the usual suspect areas but a couple of the panel beaters are suggesting removing sills just to check in behind them to look for rust. With restorations is it the rust removal and metal replacement that is the costly component? or is it smoothing the waves in the metal of the 50 year old body? The paint and panel companies said they can spend a 1000 of hour getting the body lines smoothed with no filler. Is this to a concourse level or is this to a level to what it was like when it came off the production line (minus the rust)?

That is a valid question and at this moment a difficult one for me to answer. At this moment there is no budget restraints but I dont want to over capitalise. At the time of taking the zed off the road it was my club car to compete in the odd hill climb, TRE Rallys etc and I would still like to do this and not be scared of scratching a spoiler or rim etc . If I purchased this car to day it would cost in the order of $45k to $55k so spending another $70k to $100k isnt making sense and turns it into an investment. No doubt If it was a $15k zed shell I wouldnt have any issues spending the cost to restore the shell. My concern is that the restoration companies in Newcastle want to immediately starting to undrilling spot welds to look for hidden rust inside rails and behind guards even though there is no signs of rust. My thinking is repair the areas I know about (bubbles no holes) and maybe look very closely at the known issue area and repair and replace if needed (Battery tray rear lights areas etc) or is going to cost as much as restoration . Am I way off here? What would others do in this situation? Your feedback is greatly appreicated

Hi Brains Trust My New Years resolution is to finally (after 15 years) get my Blue 240z back on the road and would like to hear your thoughts on what I should do. My car appears to have minimal visible rust, a couple of panel dings and Vinyl roof removed. I understand that there is most likely unseen rust and they can rust from the inside out but after 50 years all of the known rust spots are still solid After speaking with to a couple of paint and panel shops I am in 2 minds as to whether to just get the repairs done or go down the full restoration route. My concern is that if I go down the full restoration route the Zed wont get used as it would become an investment and not a car to take out and drive. Most likely I would just take my other unrestored red zed driving instead. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated

I have been a long time lurker and thought I would introduce myself. I have owned a Blue 71 240z (VIN HS3001303) for about 20 years. This was a rare car as it had a white vinyl roof which appeared to have factory or dealer installed. About 10 years ago the vinyl roof finally dried out and started cracking. I decided I would strip the car down and remove the Vinyl roof and tidy up the shell and give it a refresh. Due to panel beater issues and Ipurchasing a new toy to play (Mitsubishi Starion Rally Car) lost motivation. Yes I am ashamed. About a month ago I had the opportunity to buy another Datsun 240z Red (VIN HS3001523) from a longtime motorsport competitor. This car has the original engine from my blue Zed. I am glad to say I have rekindled my love of the 240zs. My aim is to give the red 240z a once over mechanically and a bit of cosmetic TLC and keep driving it. In the background I want to get the blue cars shell repaired / restored and reassembled and reunite it the blue 240z with its original engine. I am in Newcastle so if any one can recommend panel beater in the Newcastle / Sydney area it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Draconis I am not entirely sure but from feedback it has been suggested that around $1500 is in the ball park but I am open for discussion depending on what other parts are included. If you would like further informaiton don't hesitate to PM me.

Hi dat2kman Iam not sure of the history as it doens't have a CAMs logbook. I can only go by here say from the previous owner and that he purchased from a person who had it stored in his shed for years. There is a sponsors signwriting on the bonnet which is Rallyspeed which is a rally car prep company from the late 70s early 80s and an Aussie Bullbars sticker on the front door which i understand are owned by the same person. I can only assume that it was either the propieter or some close to him. The car didn't have a roll cage so I can only assume it was back when no rollcages and CAMS logbooks weren't logged. which I believe was late 70s. I should clarify that the roll cage in the photos was installed by the last owner but I removed as it wasn't installed to my satisfaction (hoop mounted on wheel arch). I was intending to used my half cage out of my other Zed and use the front legs from that cage. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
