Rear end help!

Hi Everyone

 

Need some help.

 

I'm going to go and look at what I've been told is a completely rebuilt 240z rear end which is sitting on a hillclimb car (which has never been raced or for that matter, completed). The owner doesn't know too much about the rear other than his father spend $3,000 on it many years ago.

 

Seems a lot to me unless it has a desirable diff and some other goodies.

 

Is there anything I should look out for? I guess if it has coilovers and aftermarket discs, then yes - there's the $3k. But otherwise?

 

Are there any rare bits I should look out for?

Maybe spent $3k modifying the crap out of it trying to shoehorn it into a hill climb special!

 

If it is a R180 with a clutchpack LSD and a rare 4.375 ratio, thatd be worth 1.5 to 1.7 k

 

If the struts and arms, crossmember have been chopped, they are pretty useless to Z owners now.

 

It's the diff that's worth the coin, if its a proper one.

Ask him to remove the back cover!

F he says no, lift up both sides, spin one wheel, the other SHOULD spin in the same direction.

If it goes clunk/ratchety ratchety, then it could be a locker type.

 

Cheaparse way is weld it up, but that dont mean its a LSD. Really, ? Pull off back cover, or walk away!

For 3k there should be some nice goodies under there other than an r200 or r180 lsd........youd hope

I have the WRX STI R180 with Clutch pack LSD and 4.4 ratio. They are worth around $800. Plus the "John C" input shaft converters worth another $600. Unless he got custom CV shafts or adjustable lower control arms, fully re-bushed etc etc I don't see $3000 worth. Maybe he included the cost of a rear brake conversion? Or maybe he got it all gold plated.

As above, was going to say, unless there are some crazy rear brakes on it youd be better off, and cheaper off buying off the shelf or on here

Thanks guys - pretty much what I thought.

I didn't think about the fact that it might have been modified/shortened for the hillclimb car though - good pickup.

 

I'll try post some photos if I can.
