brains Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Hey hey, Just thought I'd start a thread to share my journey with this car. I've owned a couple datsuns in the past and I've missed owning one. So far I really really enjoy the car and I have some plans too. As of when I bought it this morning: Datsun 280zx 2+2 L28 putting out approx 120kwatw borla 6" rear muffler with 4" dump tip rebuilt rear R200 3.9 Diff Rebuilt 280zx 5 speed borg warner transmission unliked 16" rims No point posting plans coz they will change as the build goes along but first on the list is some tlc and new wheels. brains Posted October 28, 2012 Author Posted October 28, 2012 First few little things Ive done to tidy up the car a bit. I took off the head light covers, just a personal preference thing: Painted the bonnet vents black instead of super sparkly baby blue: Removed the sound system and all the wiring from the car: Made up a dash insert to cover up where it had been chopped up for the head unit out of some wood and leather: And then cleaned up and detailed the interior: New wheels are arriving tomorrow, so that should be awesome! bullzed Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Aww hell, this is Dev's old Zed isn't it? Sad to see him sell it, but good to see someone else is looking after it and is part of the community. Welcome! Quote
luvemfast Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Looks great. I prefer with the headlight covers myself. And its nice to see someone REMOVING the stereo! Quote
bullzed Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 And its nice to see someone REMOVING the stereo! Aww come on Simon, don't hate on us youngin's, we just wanna feel 'fully sick' while cruising around listening to our whippersnapper beats! But no in all seriousness, I deleted my sound system too, ZX's can do with all the weight reduction they can get, plus looks more period correct. Quote
brains Posted October 29, 2012 Author Posted October 29, 2012 Yeah it's bens old car. I'm not that old! Only 21 haha would rather hear the car and keep it period correct Thanks for the kind words, going to try my best to build a respectable zx My wheels arrived this morning, nothing original to the z just some rotas but will be better than the positive offset wheels with 20mm spacers currently on the car haha Ill try and get them on tomorrow and post up a few pictures Quote
bullzed Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 I'm not that old! Only 21 haha would rather hear the car and keep it period correct The Six Section Mechanical Orchestra! What Rotas? RB-X's? Quote
brains Posted October 29, 2012 Author Posted October 29, 2012 The Six Section Mechanical Orchestra! What Rotas? RB-X's? haha for sure! yeah just the usual 9 -13 and 9.5 -19, ive got 225 50 r17 on them for now coz i had a set of KU31s lying around, any idea if ill need flares? couple of pics doesnt bother me that a lot of z's run these, i like the look of them haha and i had trouble finding anything else with decent offset Quote
bullzed Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Nah you won't need flares at all. I run 15x9 -14 and 15x9.5 -27 SSR Mesh on my Z, sits perfectly inside the guards at my height. I usually run them with 30mm spacers for shakotan styling but you'll be alright. This is a picture of mine before I got defected. Neale Rakers 15x7.5 -41 (5 inch dish) and 15x8 -57 (6.25 inch dish) You'll be running 5 inch dish and 5.5 inch dish. Quote

Quote
bullzed Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Cheers dude, and yeah I go 90nm, although a lot of the time I'm lazy and just go with whatever I weight on the end of my breaker bar (bad practice I know). I've had a look at fitting S30 flares on the 280 and it doesn't quite follow the arch line as well as desired. Also if you're going with flares only because there's a little bit of poke, I'd suggest putting 30mm spacers behind the wheels to fill out said flares. This is how much I can get my SSR's to poke with 30mm's, they'd probably just fill a flare. Quote
brains Posted October 31, 2012 Author Posted October 31, 2012 So this car has a few skeletons in its closet... Firstly some of the coolant hoses were punctured in places causing overheating, so I have replaced them all and done a coolant flush today. Secondly the way the hubs/spacers/wheels were fit is just.... In the front; 10mm bolt on + 5mm slip on + another 3mm slip on In the rear; just a 20mm bolt on The real issue is that the original studs were cut flush with the spacers, so basicly without spacers theres a stud which is this long ------------- Ive ordered 16 new ones and will replace them all, at the moment the car is unsafe to drive as I can only get 4 turns on the lugs. Lastly all the bushes are completely f.....rooted. So I will replace all them, install new studs and get a proper wheel alignment. Ive got the car just sitting on the new wheels at the moment, heres a quick picture. Quote

Stivva Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 its really starting to look the goods with new rims. well done mate! Quote
brains Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Thanks everyone for the support Did a bit more just tidying up today, installed a battery clamp etc just simple safety stuff haha Picking up new KYB shocks and Aurora springs (30mm drop) tomorrow and Ive also got new studs on the way. Also going to order all new bushes, so suspension will get a complete overhaul. Ordered some KU31 tyres as well cos the current ones are stuffed, going for 225 45 17. Im trying to rebuild my savings a bit haha so not spending too much at the moment! Also going to take off the spacers in the front, so I am having hub clearance issues due to the weird shape of them, either going to shave the hub or the rim haha Quote
brains Posted November 11, 2012 Author Posted November 11, 2012 Little update here. Got new studs, shocks, springs, tyres and steering wheel installed into the car. Quote
