Hello"'''

I just recently bought a 1971 240z with a 260z engine. The problem that I am having is with the tach. Every time I turn the key on ( engine not running ) the tach pegs all the way past 8000 rpm. I disconnected everything off of the coil and distributor with no result. I checked under the dash and it is clean. I have a feeling that I have a short between the tach and the ignition system. Has anyone out there have this problem?

Welcome, it sounds like a definite wiring issue. Perhaps it's incorrectly wired? It would be useful to know if you have electronic ignition in your car? 260z engine shouldn't make a difference.

Perhaps post some pictures of the wiring set up around your ignition coil. How 'factory' does the wiring loom look? Or does it look like someone has fiddled with the cars wiring i n the past?

No wiring problem will cause a tach to do that, not even the current triggered ones.

It is a worn/broken tach.

Best replacement would be from a late 260Z, that uses a points style trigger for the tach.
