zedrally Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 pauly, I 'd love to help you, but you need to write clearly and correctly. I'm running FT's top very succesfully , however, without clear and readable questions do not expect replies. Remember this is a web forum, not a txt or sms forum. Quote
Toecutter Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Yer I also gave up reading it the first time. I'll have a crack at interpreting this bizzare language! now many of you strait away will say through the pains out and that may be true but i wanted them for my 2.6L im buying a 2.8L with dome tops. now the problem i have is he wants to use his flat tops on his L26 as he is saving the dome tops for the L28 however he has some problems with the flat tops... 1: i have set these carbs up how i think is write ause the haynes manual i have says crap about them and cant find any info on the net so if some 1 has some pics that would be great Haynes manual has been of no help help help ...and the rest is ok enough to understand I think. pauly_adams Posted May 26, 2007 Author Posted May 26, 2007 yeh im very sorry about that i was quite pissed off at the time. i have been trying to set up flat tops on my 2.6 but cant get them to run properly. the main problem is that i dont know if h ave every thing hook up corectly so a couple of pictures would help with that 1. and i truthfuly have no idea how to balance them or change the fuel mixture, also i think i may be missing 1 peice off the manifold its a throtle opener control valve is there any way to bupass this. thanks pauly ps sorry about the confusion Quote
zedrally Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Ok, now I can be of help. Firstly, if they need Overhauling, forget them and find some roundtops. The O/H Kits are rare if not un-obtainable. Secondly, you can't change the mixture, this is factory set. You can however change the idle mixture. I suggest you set it as lean as possible. Can't help you with pictures as I'm a dinosaur and don't own a digital camera. The best information is contained in the FSM. If you follow the procedure contained within you can set them up properly as long as they are in good working order. HIH Quote
pauly_adams Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 i finaly have the buggers running without the throttle opener control valve but now i have a new problem its running rich and as soon as you plant your foot it sputters and nearly stalls also i cant get it to idle below 1250 rpm any ideas cheers pauly Quote
zedrally Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I don't have a diagram, but on the left there is a large screw about the size of a 5 cent piece. This is the idle mixture. Screw it all the way lean (in). Adjust your idle speed using the idle speed screw. These are the only adjustments you can make with these carbs. If there giving you to much trouble, chuck them and invest in some round tops. Quote
pauly_adams Posted May 28, 2007 Author Posted May 28, 2007 ive done both but no luck i think it may be because of the throttle opener control valve i bypassed it would this effect it Quote
zedrally Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Well if you think thats the cause, then why have you asked on this forum. I can tell you that it isn't and the problem lies in the carbs, more specificly the idle mixture. It only needs a little amount of buildup and they will leak gas. To solve this you MUST overhaul the carbs. There is no other way. Nuff said. Quote
pauly_adams Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 i have overhalwed them i got a flattop kit when i bought a gasket set for my L26 the only thing it didnt come with is a set of needles but i think i might try to track down 1 of those vavles i might solve the prob cheers pauly Quote
zedrally Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 It's quite possible you haven't set the needles correctly, this is the only (crude) method of enriching the mixture on these carbs. I didn't mention it at the time as I was under the impression that you had only "fiddled" with the throttle opener. Did the instructions that came with the gasket kit give you the specs on needle height?. Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 could be a number of things...... float levels. vacuum leak post throttle valves. worn needles, did they look ok?? stuck on choke, ie jet has slid down and wont slide back up by itself!! carb synch not done i could go on and on but geive me specifics, and ill try post when i get home after work one night when not working on my car. ie, did they ever work fine? what have you done? what parts have u used? what you have adjusted and why? do you have a FSManual?? nato Quote
pauly_adams Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 well i took the flat tops off only to have a down draugft carbie spray fuel all over my car. now the needles on the flat tops look fine not bent or worn ect but how there set may be a problem so how do i lean the carbs out with the needles. pistons look fine the carbies would most likely be out of sync though. now for what happernes when i put the carbies on they wouldnt idle they would fluctuate from 1100 rpm then it would jump to 2000 rpm+ but once they where above 3000 rpm they worked a treat , now i stoped the carbs from fluctuating but pluging more hoses in ect but now its running contantly rich an when u put your foot flat too the floor it just looses all power as you said its like the choke is always on, ive also ajusted the needles but then ajusted them back to where they were but that done nothing now i dont know if they ever worked fine but they where in good nick and in the boot of the car when i bought it no idea why the person put the down draugft carb on but it may have something to do with the prob im having hopfuly that helps cheers pauly Quote
zedrally Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 I think you have done as much as you can without seeking professional help. Quote
