bonnet situation - std or fibreglass?

Ok. I have a street zed.

basically when i painted the zed some years ago now i acid dipped most panels i could but didnt do the bonnet. sure enough the bonnet is bubbling in a couple of places (rust).

So  - just got a quote to dip it at around $350/400. eek. then it will need bodywork done - eek $$ to fill in the bog that falls comes out under dipping which i am sure is in a few places.

Then paint. - this cost expected.

So its going to be a blowout. I was thinking maybe i should get a fibreglass bonnet for $x and just get that painted? i think new they are in the $4-500 range but i could be wrong.

Any thoughts on this matter? obviously i would want it to open and shut like the stock hood does.

not sure which way to go on this one, i do want a good long term solution.

That's the exact reason I'm going to Fibreglass, I was starting to get surface rust on the edges of the frame. Now with Fibreglass I won't have that issue ever again. Weight saving helps too

also is fibreglass (or carbon) safe in a frontal car accident?

any real difference?

Depends what you hit.....

If it's another car or something solid, fibreglass will break and shatter into tiny pieces or a combinatioon of big and little pieces, but at least it's easy to replace, I know this from personal experience >:( Steel bonnet will fold and dent like steel does, so no real difference - in both cases the bonnet is buggered, with steel you can hit it with a hammer to straighten it out, with fibreglass you replace it.

If it's a pedestrian, well steel, fibreglass, carbon it doesn't matter they are going to have a bad day......
