Air Con for 240Z

Hey Guys,

 

Wasn't sure which section to put this under, so thought I'd put it into the general area.

 

I know that a lot of you guys build your cars for speed and hence would not want to loose power to an A/C, but I'm building my Z for cruisin'. I have the original/after market A/C compressor mounting braket for the L24 and I am trying to find a compressor to suit. Has anyone out there done this or know a good place to deal with to get A/C components sourced?

 

My car had a full A/C system when I bought it, but I am not sure of when/who put it in.

 

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

have a comp off a 2+2!, cant say its original but! especially not for the 240z!

 

some late model a/c would be nice just need a good option that is small n compact, easy to wire in and integrate mechanically etc etc etc.

I do air con and auto elec can just about get any compessor there is. Ive never seen one off a 240 have you still got the old one? you can re-build them my shop is in hallam i can help you if you need we make old systems like new :wink:

Thanks Mahem, not sure if the compressor that I have will actually fit the L24 Aircon bracket. The one that I have was on a dadgy bracket that didn't have a idler arm pulley, so the belt on it was not tnesioned correctly.

 

As the car is at the folks place (they have a nice big garage) when I go up next week I will see if the one that I have will fit the new (L24 that is) bracket.

I don't know much about refigeration, etc, but wasn't the type of gas that you use in aircon changed a while ago, back in the 90s? Does that effect the compressors that you can use, or did it just mean that you had to purge the old gas from the system and put in the new stuff?

Yeh it has to be converted to R134A? gas, much better for the environment.

bad on old seals however, makes old systems leak almost straight away if the seals in the comp etc are not compatable, they break down rapidly and needs replacing throught the system, o-rings and other rubbers are worst hit!!!

I am in the process of fitting factory Ac to an early 260Z 2+2 and can help a bit as I am in the AC game. I go hold of an original system with the factory mount and compressor. The mount is a work of art and the compressor is as big as most 4 cyl engines and it uses metric hose fittings. All got too hard so now I am chasing the after market bracket (~$150) and getting a std Sanden automotive compressor (~$350). If you have a have an after market system it will use a Sanden compressor. You can buy them from places like Heatcraft or Melbourne Auto Air.

Send me some photos and I may be able to identify the parts for you.

R134a is the only gas to use now. Most seals and hoses if they do not leak now, will not leak with R134a. You will need to change the oil and make sure the hoses and coils are flushed out (Shell-lite is the stuff to use)

You may be better off seeing if you can fit the early 260Z evaporator box, its all behind the dash and looks much nicer

Thanks for the info. I don't have any photos of the bracket that I bought recently and they are located at my folks place (1 hour drive away). I'll try to get some photos of the stuff I have over the weekend.

 

In the meantime, I will do some more info gathering based on the info you have supplied.
