gilltech Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 The Scarab Zeds were created either as fully installed turn-key installations, or the required sets of components were available over the counter. So who knows how many actually got built. And there were other companies doing similar things too, although the Scarab name seems to be the best known. The Americans are good at stuffing their V8s in to just about anything. I've seen two Scarabs in my travels many years ago (late '80's), one in Vancouver & one in Hawaii. But whether they were 'factory' or owner-built I couldn't tell & their owners weren't around to ask. The Vancouver car was labelled as a Scarab, was very tidy & looked the goods, whereas the Hawaii car I saw later I presumed was also a Scarab by the body parts but was stripped back & in primer for a repaint so looked rather unappealing. But it wasn't just V8's that could be put into Zeds - during the nasty OPEC fuel crisis days in the late '70's there was at least one company in the US offering to install diesel engines in your Zed or whatever else you had. zedrally Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 snip But whether they were 'factory' or owner-built I couldn't tell & their owners weren't around to ask. They definitely where not factory built. How rumours like this start beggers belief. Quote
