Noticed today that my temp gauge goes to maximum temp when the car starts to get warm. It is not a short as it goes up progressively - it just doesn't stop. I took the ring off th sender, but couldn't get the actual sender out. Is there a trick to it, or just rusted in there ? Of course, it could also be the gauge, as I noticed also that the oil pressure goes to max, and doesn't come back when idling. Any thoughts ?

I had a similar problem not long ago, temp gauge was working when it felt like it. I removed the wires from the sending in the thermo housing and shorted it with the ignition turned on, if it gauge goes all the way your gauge is fine, just need a new sender.

Supercheap and the like stock them, about 15 bucks. Might as well do the thermo while you are there too, if the sender is as stuck as mine was, the easiest way to get at it is through the thermo housing.

I had to replace my sender recently. It was so tightly jammed in there I ended up just taking off the whole thermostat housing and sticking it into a vice... then of course the sender disintegrated when I applied too much force to it  :-[

So long story short I ended up drilling it out. :/

Hopefully your sending isn't quite THAT bad!

The gauge has a voltage regulator in it which may have failed.

Would explain both readouts (volts and temp) going out.

Mine failed in this way on the last track day I did. Had me worried about the engine at the time.
