JDSM Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Hey all, While changing the oil in my '82 280zx for the first time, I noticed something strange. The oil drain plug has either been welded, partially melted or something, and, as such, is totally stuck in place. So, my question is, is there another easy way to drain the oil? Or does anyone have any ideas about getting the stuck bolt off without damaging the oil pan? Or am I just not trying hard enough ? My previous attempts started to damage the bolt, so I thought I'd ask before I make an even bigger mess. I stupidly put some engine cleaner in the old oil, so I don't want to drive it anywhere before emptying the old oil. Cheers, Jamie Quote
RB30X Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 If you could get a couple of clear pics of the sump plug it would be a lot easier to help you out mate. Quote
JDSM Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 These are the best I can do at the moment. Cheers for the help Quote
RB30X Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 My only suggestion at this stage is put a six sided hexagon socket on it as apposed to a more common 12 sided socket. This will reduce the amount it might slip and not round your edges off. Secondly rather than put heaps of load on the plug and slowly stressing the edges, let the ratchet take up the slack then give the handle a good tap with a hammer. The quick impact might break the seal easier than slowly forcing it. Quote
Riceburner Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 23mm ring spanner should work too. When you do manage to get out I'd be checking the threads very closely as they are prone to stripping, especially as yours seems to be over tightened. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 26, 2011 Moderators Posted April 26, 2011 Are you doing all this on the ground with the car jacked up? If so' I'd recommend getting the car to where you have access to a hoist so you can get under there properly and as Gareth said, I nice ring spanner and make sure its not partially on and then try to undo it. Give it a couple of light taps with a hammer to "break the seal" then if needed give it some heat. Quote
