Satin black paint

Anyone know a paint shop that sells satin black paint and the Clear coat? I've asked one shop but everytime I ask them they keep putting me back to Matt black :s

Simple,

 

When we used to paint Benz bumpers in a contrasting body color, we would add gloss retardent to the clear coat as they were a satin compared to closs finish.

 

If you are planning to do clear over base, / clear over black, then you apply the black and then retard the clear, its only a very small amount in the clear, as in oz's.

 

Would be easier to direct you if we knew what you were planning to paint.

Sorry I forgot to add that I was going to paint my 280zx, all I get from the paint shop is that I should be giving the car a few coats and that'll be satin black :s I doubt he knew what I meant. Also with the retardant or duller is it possible to sand it down to smooth out the paint or will it shine with all it's glory if I sand it down afterwards. One more thing I'll be spraying it myself with acrylic paint

I cant be 100% sure, we used to low bake enamel.

 

What I would say is if you are going to do it in satin, eventually you will have to polish it even by hand, and from memory, and Im saying from memory, when we used to de-bur contaminents in the paint it wouldnt gloss up like normal paint as the clear had been chemically altered.

 

The problem you will have is that acrylic clear over base especially in black may be effected due to temputures when spraying and you may get a haze if you are not careful.

 

Id strongly suggest that you base up the car in black, runb it back, then get a panel shop to put it in a booth and give it one flow coat of black follwed by a clear, there is no problem low baking it in enamel clear if its done properly and contaminents will be almost zilch that way and you will have a better finish.

When we used Satin black it is a solid color so not clear over base and you have to leave it

how ever it comes off the gun as polish makes it shiny again. A good painter will get a great finish of the gun anyway.

Not sure on clear over . As sirpent said  there is an additive for matting the paint bit im not 100% sure that if you block it back and polish it

wheather it will still be satin.

Don't go Matt Black as UV light kills it really quick.

I have sprayed a matt or satin finish on numerous cars. The easiest way is to use flattening base mixed in with the colour or clear. If you are planning to do it at home i assume you are doing it on a budget. I would recommend Hi-Chem (Motospray) products as they are easy to use, good quality for the price and readily available. If you are going for satin black, i would paint the car in straight colour (either acrylic or 2 pack) with the flattening base added. I don't believe you will need to clear coat the car.

 

Hi-Chem's flattening base is added straight to the tinter, how flat the finish is depends on how much flattening base you add. I add about 75% for a completely matt finish and 40%-50% for a satin finish but it is best to spray out some test panels first to achive the desired finish. Once it is finished you should not need to buff or polish it as you are not after a gloss finish anyway. That is the great thing about matt/satin finishes, they are done straight off the gun (i hate buffing).

The only hint i have for applying the paint is that i apply it quite heavy, being careful to have plenty of overlap on the strokes. If there is not enought overlap then you get dry "lines" along the finish of the car.  I highly recommend practicing on some test panels to hone your technique and figure out the paint mixing ratio's. You might have to do it a few times but it will be worth it in the final result.

 

If you are using any other brand of product make sure you read the directions on the tin or data sheet as each brand will have different mixing ratio's. I'm not sure where in Sydney you are but out Penrith way i get my paint from either Auto West or KGP, i'm sure you will be able to find a decent auto paint supplier in the phone book near you.
