Oil filter mount

while changing the oil the other day, I noted that almost all the oil filters Ive ever seen on L24,26 & 28s are mounted at 90deg to the block and flush, on my L28 however the filter mounting "pod" is at 45deg pointing forward. does anyone know why Nissan did this ? also If I remove the mounting plate , will I be left with the threaded spindle at 90deg ?

A very long time ago, 15 years ago or so, I changed an l20 out for 2nd hand engine, from 200b into 720 ute. I noticed the difference between the two filter mounts, and seem to recall that it was to clear the steering mechanism. I don't recall there being any issues changing it over, but as I said, it was a long time ago.

Wayne is right, it was to clear the steering linkage in a 280ZX. If you remove it, you will have to find the threaded part to install in the block once you remove the alloy extension. The one in the alloy block is way too long so try and find a short one before you remove it or else you won't be able to run your engine.

so Im right to assume an L24-26 "stubby" mount should be interchangeable with a late series L28.....yeeeeess ??

Yes...for sure. Just make sure you tighten it firmly...
