Hi all

My 240z came without a compliance plate (misplaced during restoration?)

I was led to believe the build date is a 72, however I have just noticed faint impressions on the side guard where the plate should be, stamped maybe 3 73.

With a chasis No. of HS30 100414, I was hoping someone may have one around the same number to shed some light as to the build date

thanks, Michael

Closest one I could find to yours is:

HS30-100983 240Z 1/1973

Engine No: L24-151379

Yours would either be a very late 72, or early 73.

Unfortunately the latest 72 I have info in is Gavins 2/1972, which is still a 5 digit chassis number.

Whats the engine number? Is it the original engine?

taken from the parts catalogue Dec 79 (final edition)

240z=HS30(A)(U)(Q)

Applied Date Oct69-May71=00003-00500 Jan71-Aug71=00501-01500 Sep71-Jun72=01501-14000 Jul72-Jul73=14001-101537

So that makes your car between Jul 72-and Jul73 hoever given this production run stated at 14001 it would more likely be 73.

I asked Carl Beck, who runs the US register for Zeds, for help in dating your car based on the engine number.

Because the engine numbers were unigue, unlike Chassis numbers for RHD and LHD cars, you can compare engine numbers with US cars to determine approximate build dates.

He thinks its a late 72 or very early 73 complianced car.

It depends on how often shipments of Z's arrived in Australia, as the date on the compliance plate is the date they arrived/were complied, not the build date. (build date at a guess he thinks around September or October 72).

As we get more details on the Aussie register we should be able to narrow it down for you.

I didn't realise there could be duplicate chassis numbers on these cars. Anyone know what the reasoning was behind that? Were the LHD and RHD built at different plants?

All built at the same plant I think.

I guess Nissan regarded the left and right hand export cars as different models, and also the Domestic market cars too.

For example there could be 3 different cars thought of as #230:

HS30 - 00230 (That Australian car on ebay with the flares)

HLS30 - 00230 (Left hand drive car, that probably went to the USA)

S30 - 00230 (Japanese Domestic market car)
