260Z Auto Transmission - Drain Location

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am about to pull my auto box out to check it over as it was not bolted up correctly when I got my car. Where is the transmission drain plug to drain the fluid out? Anyone have a pic? Is there anything I need to be wary of when draining the fluid, pulling out the box and putting it back in? Cheers guys. :)

From memory, not many auto's have drain plugs. You have to remove the whole lower pan to change the oil. You will have to buy a gasket/rebuild kit when you put it back together.

Correct. No drain plug. You have to do it as Dimitri said.

This is what it will look like when pan is removed: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,6869.0.html

When I was playing with autos back in the day I actually welded a thread onto mine with a plug so I could drain it easier.

My question is why are you removing it? Surely you could see if it was bolted up properly from the outside around the bell housing. Or do you mean the stally isnt engaging or something like that. Either way you shouldn't need to take the pan off.

It is sitting there with about a 10mm gap between it and the engine. I tried to tighten the bolts to pull it together but no luck. Maybe I should put a jack under it and try to move it around a bit? Otherwise I will have to pull it out and put it back properly. If I do I think I will just plug the holes so I don't have to drain it. Thoughts? Cheers.

Could be a number if things mate. Loosen the bolts off and remove the tail shaft and wiggle the box round a bit. Up and down from the rear of the box and also rotate the box left and right at the bell housing.

I can only think of two reasons why it won't bolt up.

1. The torque convertor has not been installed correctly as you should be able to move it back and forward freely at least a few mm's when the gearbox is mounted to the engine.

2. The flexplate could be mounted on backwards. (highly unlikley)

Either way it would require you to move the engine or transmission a least a few inches to fix the problem.

Managed to get it mounted properly by putting one jack under the engine sump and another under the front of the transmission and adjusting so that engine and transmission matched up. Flexplate bolts are supposed to sit about 22mm inside the front housing but do not seem to sit quite that far back. Is this ok. Certainly seems to be bolted up correctly. I just hope the PO put all the flexplate-crankshaft bolts in properly ;D

Thanks guys
