Sanding car slowly. Need some advice

Hi Guys,

 

I am going to begin sanding back the car slow;y in preperation of a re-spray.

 

I will be doing it slowly by hand over the next couple of months (it's more a hobby and I don't have crazy amounts of time to do it all at once). So I thought I'd do a panel at a time either by hand or with an electric sander.

 

My question is this..

Once I have stripped the panel, what should I then do so they don't rust over time until the whole car is ready to be painted? I will be fixing rust as I go also.

Why not just work on one panel at a time? Sand the drivers guard first and fix the rust, then put it in primer, then progress to passenger's guard, bonnet, engine bay etc.

 

That's how I'm doing mine anyway.

Yes that was what I was planning on doing. I should probable re-phrase it a bit although I think you already answered my question.

 

Once I have sanded the panel and fixed rust, should I prime it?

 

Is there anything else as well as priming I should do?

 

This is my first time doing this sort of thing.

you should etch the panel after fixing it, then prime, then you will need to putty, prime, topcoat.

Yea, etch primer has a high Zinc content to stop rust and Epoxy the insides of panels helps too.

Yes that was what I was planning on doing.....

 

Ah yes, my apologies, I just re-read your post and realized I should have read more carefully. 

 

Is epoxy easier to remove than Rust Bullet (or other similar rust preventative product)? I was looking at Rust Bullet a while ago and came across several instances of people saying it was a PITA to remove after the panel was dented.
