Rebuild the Hitachi round tops or upgrade to British 1.75 SU's?

My round top Hitachi's are in dire need of a rebuild, the throttle shafts need to be rebushed and all the rest.

 

Is there any useful performance gain upgrading to rebuilt 1.75" British SU's or IHF carbs on a relatively stock L28 instead of the Hitachi items?

 

Anyone have experience using both carbs?

 

Yes triples would be nice, but out of my price range atm  :-\

I have run flat top hitachi's, 2" brit SU's, and 1 3/4 brit su's on my L26.

 

Performance gain i would say there is no difference if both are in good condition.

 

All in all; my move to british was more based around the fact that you couldnt get rebuild kits for hitachis or parts when i changed over and there were a lot more needle and jet combos for brit SU's, and parts availability was good for the brit carbies. I had the dreaded flat tops so a move away was a no brainer, and noone had parts for the hitachi round tops back then.

I can't see there being much performance improvement if the throat diameter is the same (round tops are 1.75" too).

 

The only benefit would come from being able to test a bigger variety of needles to see which gives you the best performance. I doubt you'll want to go to such effort though

 

The throttle shaft rebushin is a bit of a hassle though, doesn't this have to be done professionally?

Ah i see... for some reason i thought the hitachi carbs were a bit smaller at 1.5" don't know why i thought that.

 

I suppose i will just rebuild the Hitachi's, as there wouldnt be much point buying used British examples then rebuilding them for the same outcome. And of course there is the whole originality thing, not that the car s very original
