Veloce Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Does anyone know where the rear harness ground should be on a 240z? Im pretty sure from what i have seen there is a large ground coming off the harness where the wires go to the fuel pump and branch off to the tail lgiht assembly. I have looked under the trim in the rear hatch area and i have looked under the car but cannot find one? When my indicators are on i can hear the the fuel pump sound change in pitch so i assume there is a bad ground. I also have an issue where at times all my indicators will light up when i press the brake pedal, but i think this is more to do with the light globe holders. Does anyone add extra ground points at the rear? Cheers Quote
Veloce Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 Yes still has the original type alternator and voltage regulator. Voltage regulator is new. Excuse my ignorance but what might that have to do with the rear harness ground? I seem to recall there is supposed to be a ground wire that attaches to the body at the rear of the car that is a part of the electric fuel pump harness (yelllow wires, black gound wire, grommet and connector). I remember seeing a harness advertised on a suppliers website but i cant seem to find a picture of it. Anyone know where the black ground wires in the tail light harness end up? I assumed they grounded at the fuel pump harness ground but i suppose not? The factory service manual doesnt show ground locations very clearly... Quote
Veloce Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 ok... here's a pic of the harness i'm talking about in the FSM. Harness no. 4 - "tank and fuel harness" Any idea where the G - ground wire attaches to the chassis? Quote
herrods Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 now you'll have to excuse my ignorance, but G stands for "green" in that diagram doesnt it? GR - Greed with red stripe and so on?? black is ur ground AFAIK..... and if i recall coffectly mine was attached just near where the fuel filler travels from the guard into the tank.... Quote
Veloce Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 Ok i'll check there again thanks... For some reason i thought the G was referring to the ground, thought the symbol beside it meant ground. Just seems odd why there would be a green wire going nowhere on the diagram. Quote
herrods Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I had another look. you have yellow, and black in one clip, and green in another. my fuel wiring is a bit all over the shop due to a number of people having a swing at rewiring it. you will find that the black one in the clip is ground, meaning it takes it's ground from the rest of the harness (back @ the alternator) yellow and gerrn will be main power and.... (im lost on the second wire) Quote
Veloce Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 Very strange... had a look through a factory supplement manual for a late '71 model and it shows the same diagram with more detail. It shows the same harness but it also shows the ground to chassis wire i was looking for. Or was this deleted on the '73 model? It appears the ground wire is underneath the car near the grommet somewhere, most likely covered in filth. I'm tempted to ground it somewhere inside the car but i'll give it a good clean... that is if it exists on the '73 Quote
NEW240 Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I am currently installing a loom in 73 240, I have a black ground wire inside the hatch between the two rear lights. Hope this helps. Cheers Vince. Quote
