Sirpent Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 "Any color you want as long as its Black" Well that was old Henry Fords moto when the Model "T" was released, bit ironic that such a Capitalist had such Socialist views toward the public, anyhow the reason for the post........ There are many of us who are committing vast sums of time and money restoring our "Zeds", and then we go and botch all the work by picking the wrong color, so I'm looking for opinions and also want to see examples of colors that other "Restoration Head Cases" on here are about to commit "Hari Kari" too, so here is my first offering..... Opinions please, how do ppl feel about this color for RoZe" my project car ? It's a new Lexus color called "Matador Red" Cheers John Quote
FLEXZED Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 hey john i like it, is this colour available on lexus cars in aus if yes i will defiantly pop in and see it Loui Quote
zedevan Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 i personally think lexus paints have to much pearl in them (notice a black is350 today purely because it was so shiny) - so it depends what you're wanting your car to look like it could look really awesome with the porsche gt style front, or look horible on a 'period correct' style car Quote
Sirpent Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 Loui, Zed... Thanks for responding guys, the color is actually a "Mica" color unlike a pearl that needs a base color to throw off the final effect, thats a big advantage when it comes to subsequent posible repairs down the track. With regard to Loui's question, it isnt avaiable on Australian Lexus IS250's as an option, like the saying goes, the name Lexus was conjured up by Toyota and apparently means L-imited EX-port U-nited S-tates, seems this color is Limited to the U.S. market also. And zed, I'm 100% going ahead with the Hybrid G-Nose, just trying to decide what to do with the rear of the car now. I did find something else on the net, seems Street Racers in the U.S. love this color so much that one had his "Zed" re-finished in it, I think it looks the goods especially with the wheel combo. Cheers John Quote
zedevan Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 it will definately highlight the sexy shape maybe just shave the rear? Quote
Sirpent Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 Hmmmmmmmm Zed Appreciate your thoughts and posts........ I was thinking along these lines, too radical? Cheers John Quote
xa1973 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 "Any color you want as long as its Black" Well that was old Henry Fords moto when the Model "T" was released, bit ironic that such a Capitalist had such Socialist views toward the public, anyhow the reason for the post........ Not a capitalist and definitely not a Socialist... 1908 until 1913 available in Green, Red, Blue and Grey, hand built for the wealthy.. 1914 until 1927 available in 30 different shades of Black, specifically and purposely because Black was cheap and durable, designed for the exercise of keeping costs down so the average person could buy one @ $825 Quote
Brabham Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 What was your cars original color? My advice is to go with that if you know what it was. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 that red looks awsome. have u got the paint code for it or can you get one? if u can can u pass it on please. im looking at reds as well (for the mustang) but having trouble finding what i want. this red seems to hit the spot. so i want the code to get a sample ordered and panel painted. other reds i looked at was mazda red on Rx8, 6 and 3. looks good but tad dark. BMW calipsorot is nice metalic red too. but again just tad too dark. GT40 look rear end be definetly unique. though not sure how will it suit and probably change the character of the car a fair bit. i still want my Z to be recognised as a Z and not cause too much confusion. one way to be sure on the cheap get it photoshoped and see what u think. Sirpent Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 RBZ, The color isnt available on Australian LExus models, however I have spoken to a beater mate of mine and the formula's are available and can be mixed by any panel shop or auto paint retailer. The code is LEXUS : Matador Red Mica (3R1) Cheers John Quote
RBZ 260 Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 wicked. cheers for that. i also found this lexus colour to be very nice. this is my option 2 for the mustang. but i allready have 2 blue cars. ive got code for this i think Z will look awsome in this hue. thogh being pearl may hit the pocket a fair bit. http://www.worldisround.com/articles/123897/photo289.html Quote
Sirpent Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 Thats a great color too, I'm not big into blues, but that one does hit the spot. Cheers John Quote
mayhem Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 love the red ! do it! something different.. but in saying that you cant touch that up if needed you will have to spray it again being a pearl unless the exact same measurements are made when doing it again its tricky in that regard .. to get it spot on i mean , but other than that with some gloss black highlights it will look so sexy Quote

Cheers John Quote

HEY JOHNNY ! I didnt say you could use it ! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember, try to have it put over a light base color, even though it's MICA the substrate color can still have an effect. And for God's sake, post a pic on here afterwards. Cheers John Quote

Cheers John hahaha i did say i was going to use it on the mustang if i like it. hihihihi not on the Z. colour is kinda secret at the moment for the 240z. and probably by the time z gets on the operating table ur car be due for another overhaul. LOL so dont worry not using that red on the Z. thanks for the tip was going to use gray base but i think it may need silver or white. ill check with paint guru to recomend the base colour. will post it (if it turns out ok) but be couple of weeks till i get around to it. sample panel be headlight cone of 260z and mustang one. Sirpent Posted September 29, 2009 Author Posted September 29, 2009 Its all good Johnny The Z Head lamp Cone would give a good indication, Id just use a white as posible base undercoat, and make sure he lays the red in dust coats not heavy coats so its consistant and only just achieves coverage without transperancy of the undercoat, then go nuts on the clear coat. Cheers John Quote
RBZ 260 Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 John got some bad news for ya. that 3R1 is 3 layer pearl. it has like 4 different pearls in it. also has two colours. ie u got to use light base for example white to get the brighter red or black for darker shade. than u have the red base coat a combinations of various colours including bronze. after that u have the actual colour which includes 4 different pearls with one fairly expensive one. than on top of that u got the clear. only approximate cost be roughly $150+ PL plus base. though the top red u wont need as much as the base red. The guy is my fiancee's cousin he owns a crash shop. im going to bring him a guard next week and we spray it. it be mustang guard but still should give us an idea. he also suggested to me to use ferrari red. beleive it or not even that has pearl in it. very nice red as well. if we have time we get a sample of that too. anyway i keep you posted. Quote
Sirpent Posted October 1, 2009 Author Posted October 1, 2009 I think you are right, whats decieving is that it is termed a MICA as oppossed to a PEARL, it is a tri-coat paint as I found out after researching it a bit more, in other words, Primer, Base, Mid-Color coat and Clear, but I also found out that apparently photos dont do it justice and that the depth of color is pretty amazing, lets hope your buddy comes back with something special when he sprays it out, and of course you will be able to confirm if the real thing is better than the pics reveal. Apart from that, Im not spraying the thing in the garage anyhow, was hoping to edge up the jams, but will probably hand over the rolling chassis to my mate to finish in his oven now instead. Cheers John Quote

Hey Johnny, What ever happened to the Mustang guard spray out? DONT HOLD OUT ON US NOW ! Cheers John Quote
RBZ 260 Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 John he is in the middle of upgrading his workshop. just got in new spray booth but not completed yet. also his ripping out the office area and redoing. so hes kinda very busy. also due to this he has a back log of cars to do. i did talk to him last nite. and he still seems very keen. so as soon as the upgrades are done ill be taking both guards to him. one in matador red the other in a ferrari red. even the ferrari red has bit of pearl in it. he suggested to do a spray out of that one as well.he thinks i may like it better than the lexus one plus it be marginaly cheaper and will be brighter. that matador red has a bit of bronze colour to it. he thinks it will look better without it . so once hes settled we do few experiments.
