Performance tyres

Hey everyone

 

Just order my new wheels and was after some advice on a good brand of tyre. The car is only used on weekends so I'm not worried about wear just after a tyre thats street legal but gives better grip than your average tyre.

The previous owner of my car had put a cheap set of falkens on the car. They were so hard that my corolla was faster then my Z in the rain, it was rather embarrassing. I wanted the best tire I could get for the wet and was recommended Bridgestone Potenzas. They are great, great in the wet and incredible in the dry. Probably not as good as a semi slick in the dry but I am sure they are much better then a semi slick in the wet.

 

By the way, mine is just a weekend car as well.

As Lurch said, any semi-slick is the way to go.  I've only had experience with Dunlop DZ03G and Bridgestone RE55's.  These are probably the best two semi-slicks about.  I run the Dunlops because they're about 0.5-1 second quicker around our local tracks.  For a road car I'd go the RE55's as they work better cold.  If you're not worried about wear go for the TT (Time Trial) or WT (Wet) compound and they'll be much better than any street tyre wet or dry.  Or in the Dunlops go for the medium or soft compounds.  But be warned that these will wear very very quickly and aren't cheap.  Another tyre worth looking into are the Toyo's.  These are much cheaper and people are starting to get good results with them.

If you do go with the semi slick's, they are a bit noisy on the freeway so be prepared to sound like a 4WD at high speed! It's worth it if you ask me! If you have 16" wheels, contact Laurence (Lgee on this forum) to try used semi slicks at a good price with plenty of life left in them..
