nedloh312 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I don't know much about cameras, so if anyone knows a good camera, here are the main things i will use it for Fishing - Taking photos of fish that are Jumping, Splashing or caught and on display by the angler (Held in such a way to reflect all of the fishes natural colors) Car Photography - Taking photos of my car in action and other cars Scenery - When i go fishing, i stand on a mountain at 5am and look over the sea which has the sun just coming up and the water that is so clear you can see the bottom hehe Am looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_450D right now, dunno though hehe Quote
zedevan Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 you can't go wrong with a DSLR, i've had fun lately playing around with my bro's older 300D - although to get the most out of them you really wanna start buying a few different lenses and it does start to add up (he wants to get a really wide lense, which alone is $600ish), and it possibly gets annoying to change between them - and then its something big and bulky to carry around, so it depends how important a really nice shot is to you since you go fishing you might want to consider getting a crapper drop/water resistant camera, while they are only point and shot type ones you can get photos you could never get otherwise, just from the fact you can confidently hold it 1cm above the water and not worry about destroying it - half above and half below photos look quite cool too i'm planning to get a tz5 (tz15 in australian shops) or tz7 when they come out as they are a good compromise between an slr and a point and shot - while also doing HD quality video, and a wide angle lense (25-28mm) with 10x zoom. here are some photos taken from one of them http://www.brendanstromberger.com/hdr/ the other camera which is catching my eye are those from fuji as they have a larger sensor (like DSLR's) so get much better night time shots, while still having 5x zoom starting from 28mm - check them out at www.dpreview.com Quote
mrp69 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 hey man ive got a cannon 400d that i bought a year back only used it twice will to sell it if you keen pm me or give me a buzz 0425 319 100 come with a twin lense kit perfect for a beginer peter Quote
RaceBorn Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I have the 400D twin lense kit Pete is talking about. It's fantastic and other than buying new lenses for it, I can't imagine you wanting to upgrade for a few years (unless you took it very seriously and your needs exceeded the camera's abilities). I think overall, the 400D is an awesome starter semi-pro SLR. And since it's been superseded by the 450D from Canon, you can get them for a bargain these days Also, I have a Canon IXUS 90IS (pocket camera) which I carry almost everywhere, it's compact, takes great photos in almost all lighting conditions, and perfect for the times I don't want to carry my 400D. Hope that helps ! Quote
nedloh312 Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 Wow! Thanks for the responses! @Zedevan, I am yet to get a scrath on my fishing reel so it should be fine to get a good camera @Mrp69, Got a price? A second hand kit would be great, just starting to get into it and just dumped 6k on a car so @Raceborn, Thanks for the great advice Will chat to Mrp69 about it Quote
sexual_sushi Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 heya, i work in a photo studio and we use canon eos 1d mach 3's but at $13500 just for the body it's well out of anyones price range. i found it hard to go down in quality but eventually got a canon 40d that cost me jsut under $3000 with some extra gear and that was over a year ago. i can say this is a very good camera but probably still too much for an entry level enthusiast. here are some full size pics i have been playing with recently (note the 1st link is staright from the camera but the 3 after have been edited with photoshop for different effects, they will probably appear a little bit grainy due to the sharpening effects I have been using lately) http://www.shaun-maluga.com/Images/Mini/IMG_1994.jpg http://www.shaun-maluga.com/Images/Mini/IMG_2178.jpg http://www.shaun-maluga.com/Images/Mini/IMG_1980.jpg http://www.shaun-maluga.com/Images/Mini/IMG_2067.jpg the 400d/450d's are great entry level dslr's like everyone has suggested. definitly worth the money. only complaint would be that im a pretty big guy and it felt a bit small in my hands, but that would be about the only complaint at that price range. the issue with these dslr's is the size. i really only use my camera when i have really planned to, not really a happy snaps at a party kinda camera. if you want something a bit more compact and user friendly the canon powershot g9 is a great camera. a guy i used to work with uses one, here is his flickr stream... http://www.flickr.com/photos/gabeveit/with/3230462682/ basically i would advise that if you want to get into photography and learn a few techniques and get a little creative every now and again then start with the 400/450d. if you want something that you can have on hand and take some nice photos of your life then go the powershot. if you get into and want some photoshop advice then feel free to drop me an email Quote
fufu Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 WOW, I'm no studio photographer but i use: Canon 5D mark I (thinking of going mark II) 24-70mm F2.8 L 70-200mm F2.8L IS 2 x 580ex II St-e2 for strobist fun (esp automotive photography) pretty good kit I would say. My kit is pretty much $5000 in price roughly at the moment. Also thinking of buying a 16-35mm II at the right price and a 15mm fisheye to complete my set. Then I'll buy a few more tripods/flashes and umbrella kits. A good camera to start off with is the 450D. If you want more of a learning kirb maybe try a 50D. I know a lot of people who start photography start with a 450D and within 6 months they just jump to a 40-50D. I'm just adding stuff to Sexual_sushi's post but theres a g10 out now which is the newer model of the g9. It's the top of the range point and shoot for canon. which allows raw photography for post editing. Quote
