luvemfast
Hey there everybody. I'm after opinions, I guess a pro's and con's list. Remembering that my car is on CH plates and is rarely driven, its used mainly for motorsport. I am at a fork in the road..... I have a stock L28 in my 280ZX running extractors, 2 1/2" exhaust and a pod filter. I want to go faster, DUHH... as does everybody else. Long term plans are to rebuild another L28 that I have, with more go fast parts. In the meantime, R&D time for air and fuel to put on that engine. For those that have seen my earlier posts about EFI intakes, that is one option. But, the manifold is the easy and cheap part. I need to be able to utelise it. Meaning that I need to upgrade injectors, MAF/AFM, fuel rail, ECU etc... I'm thinking $3000+ However, triples are intitially cheaper to set up, sound HOT, give awesome performance but sacrifice drivibility and need more tuning maintenance. I'm thinking $1500 Then the next question is which carby type? Weber, Solex or Dellorto? Discuss.......
modular9
My take Qld rego authorities would not legally allow me to fit older carb emission stuff to a newer car. I asked this with the idea of wacking triples on a RB25 . The rego authorities said that it would contravene state laws. Victoria might be different? Triple carbs are horn but fuel efficiency is ... interesting. I had twin sus as well as triple dellortos so far and the power output is great but the fuel was almost back on par with my v8 falcon ( 1978 750 dp 302 ) I was not impressed with this part. Daily driver ? The triples chuffed coughed and was a little overkill for the 15 km/h 1.5 hour crawl to work in the morning. Also fuel volume is important but then you probly got an efi fuel pump so you should be ok. As you might guess i am seriously thinking of selling the dellortos , keeping the manifold , putting on gsxr 750 throttle bodies + MS + linkage mods and doing that. zeddophile has given me a lot of info on this type of mod. If you can legally put on triple carbs on your newer car in your state i would do it. I mean you can always sell them on. There is a set on here that is good to go in the classified section. I like the design of your manifold and would love to see it done but i also can see why you want to hear the triples on. I had tears in my eyes when i fired up my car the first time. ;D
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 17, 2008 Moderators Share Posted July 17, 2008 One great option to think about is the best of both worlds is an ITB setup! The smoothness of EFI and the "music" from the 6 trumpets. Only con is the cost. But once you have it all, there is nothing more to spend. Each throttle body costs around the $400 mark, then you need injectors, fuel rail etc. If you car is setup already for EFI, you don't have to modify your fuel tank! Another saving! 260Coupe
Properly tuned Mikuni Solex carbs are as smooth as injection, do not "chuff and back fire" and have very reasonably economy...........and have the glorious induction noise .IMHO far superior to injection The sectret is in the set up and tuning which must be done by an expert, once set up you will rarely if ever have to touch them again. Can be sourced from the US rebuilt with all new linkages, butterflies and soft parts for around $2K and will last you a life time.
luvemfast
What do people know of mega squirt? Think this may be the best option for a modded budget EFI. Can it be spliced into the factory loom? Is anyone here an "expert" with it? I was looking at using a Q45 throttlebody (have), Z32 MAF (need), RB20 injectors (have), custom fuel rail (make), 280ZX dizzy (have) and custom intake manifold (make). What else do I need and will Megasquirt be able to run it? Will this be cheaper and better than triples? Another option is using an M30ECU from a VG30DE Maxima. There is a guy on HybridZ that is doing it. It has tuning capabilities as it connects to a laptop from factory. Has a vid on youtube too. Anyone aware of this mod? Add
Hey, Checkout www.zdriver.com there is a great deal of info on megasquirt in the 280ZX forum. They are a pretty helpful group also. Add

Zedback
Hi, I've got MS II running on my 280zx controlling both fuel and spark. Wasn't too hard. Still using stock throttle body and distributor. You can look here http://thezgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1161 or just PM me with any Q's. Hybridz is another good source of info.
