ZD44TT Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Hi Guys, I'm after a new/rebuilt alternator as mines carked it. Does anyone know of a reputable place to get one rebuilt? I feel that I can't trust the normal alt rebuild shop unless they've had experience in them. SWR - have a 80amp package with fittings that cost a wopping $550 and they recon a rebuild will set me back approx $250. Cheers. Will. Quote
mayhem Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 to bad your not in melbourne ... im an auto elec i think those prices are a bit to much Quote
ZD44TT Posted April 29, 2008 Author Posted April 29, 2008 thanks mate. Anyone else have alternative alternator set ups thats easy to do......i.e no fabrication involved besides redoing connections. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 30, 2008 Moderators Posted April 30, 2008 If you can get a hold of a 280ZX alternator, they go in without any mods except for removing the external reg and some basic wiring. Quote
ZD44TT Posted April 30, 2008 Author Posted April 30, 2008 Yeh? I looked at the 280zx turbos and they looked complete different.....then again I'm not 100% sure. Theres two of them at pick'n'payless so i'll have a looky this wkend. Thanks heaps.........thats the exact info I was after. Quote
Scoota G Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 This was my fix. http://www.viczcar.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=10762&pos=4 I had a reco alternator in mine (that i still Have) but it was only 35 Amps so i got one off Ebay and did a slight modification to the alternator bracket as in drilling the hole right through the mount and a bit of grinding. Also i had a EA Falcon (early) one on as before which required very little Mods and was pushing 85 Amps. The one in the picture is 100 Amps and cost $210 Delivered. Quote
ZD44TT Posted April 30, 2008 Author Posted April 30, 2008 what car does your current alt come from? Quote

Scoota G Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 The pulley is slightly different but no probs running it just required a smaller fan belt (length). I'll try to find a similar one on Ebay (where i bought it from) and post up the link. Quote
Scoota G Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 This is the same as the one i bought it is listed as universal. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-CHROME-100-AMP-1-WIRE-UNIVERSAL-ALTERNATOR_W0QQitemZ140228110366QQihZ004QQcategoryZ43807QQcmdZViewItem Just type in alternator into Ebay and she is there. Also if you do an expanded view of My Motor you can see the Modification clearly, took only a couple of hours to do. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 30, 2008 Moderators Posted April 30, 2008 With the 280ZX Alt, everything is identical. When I said before to remove the reg, I meant the regulator thats mounted on the car... not the reg built into the alternator (just to make sure theres no confusion). You just have to make a wire loop and attach it where the external regulator was. I'll have to check again, theres another little thing you have to do on the two pin plug that goes into the back of the alternator. Something to do with a yellow wire.... Quote
mayhem Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 you have to pull out the batt light which is controled by the orig reg just use a test light to find one of the smaller wires that has ignition on it with a test light on it the light may come on but you may need to flash it to ground it should spark a little get someone to sit in the car to see if it flashes then you know your on the right track .... depending on the alt you install that wire goes to the d+ teminal on the back should be a spade terminal Quote

I didn't get a chance to see what Amps my current one is so that'll shed some light on things. I'm crap with electricals.......- what does a regulator look like? Quote
ZD44TT Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 Hey guys.........where is the bushes located on this alt? At the top - behind the black plate with the two silver screws? does anyone know where I can get replacement bushes for this 260z alternator? man their so cheap in the US..... Quote
maddos Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I assume you mean "Brushes" when you say "Bushes" Yep pretty sure they're in that one (changed mine couple of months ago). Just pull them out and take to your local auto elec joint they keep all differnt sorts. If you don't have access to a soldering iron they will be able to swap for you as well. Quote
ZD44TT Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 hahah yeh I meant brushes....... kool thanks for the idea.........i hate alt problems...... Scoota G Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I have exactly the same one (Hitachi) on my garage bench. Had it rebuilt in Ballarat from a place that has now moved. Can see if i can chase them up if you like? They may be able to get stuff. Quote
ZD44TT Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 did you say you still had the rebuilt one?..........i might get it off you if i can't get it sorted this weekend. There so cheap in the US it's insane. Quote
Scoota G Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Yep that is correct i still have the rebuilt one. I took it out cause i like my car audio. I replaced with the 100amp one. Quote
