theremm Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 As title says looking for a slip yoke tailshaft preferably from a late 240z. 90% through auto to manual conversion on my '73 240z and the auto tailshaft is about a thumb's width too short. I'm using a 71B gearbox. Prefer to use the correct shaft rather than alter length. Located Brisbane, but let me know what you got. Quote
Brabham Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I thought I read in a thread somewhere that late 240 auto and manual tailshafts were identical, so will be interested if someone can confirm that they are different. Quote

How far does the slip yoke need to insert into the gearbox? When I push it in as far as it can go I have just over a thumb's width of room between the universal joint at the back of the tailshaft and the diff. I just assumed the yoke needed to go in all the way and thus that the tailshaft was too short as a result? Quote
dat2kman Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Your thumbs aren't as fat as mine, so yes, you are fine to bolt that in! Quote

dat2kman Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The driveshaft manfacturers, ie Driveline Services, Brendale, or the mob in Geebung, usually make up a shaft with around 15mm of movement fore/aft. In a live axle situation, as the diff moves vertically ( mostly!) up down, at some point the distance is shortest, ( when level) at full droop and bump it is furthest, the driveshaft mbs then make the shaft so it doesnt ram into back f box. Apparently, our fixed diff and fixed gearbox also needs this clearance,,,,! Quote
Retro Z Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 That tailshaft you have is fine to use. The yoke does not need to be seated all the way in as long as none of the smooth shaft part is exposed. Quote
theremm Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Thanks guys. I also rang up both driveline services in brendale and hardy spicer in eagle farm and they said that you want the slip yoke to be seated approximately 20-25mm (25mm max) out from the back of the gearbox to allow room for movement etc. I'll get some more accurate measurements tonight but it sounds like the shaft should be right to use. theremm Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Measured up tonight and have 24-25mm exactly off horizontal freeplay. If all is true then this should still be suitable for use! Slip yoke is 105mm total length, so this gives me still 80mm of yoke in the box. Can anyone confirm whether the driveshafts from factory manual late 240z's had the same amount of freeplay, or a lesser amount? Quote
PZG302 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 If you haven't got this sorted before the 24th, I get back from Indonesia and I think I still have my driveshaft from the race car which is what you want. If I do, I am sure we sort something out, beer or whisky economy is good...... Quote
