bolt7484 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Hi guys, Yes I know that they are very different. lol. Does anyone have any experience with what parts are common between the 280ZX and a 280z/260z? Looking at getting a cheap donor car. Will the diff and rear suspension have any compatible parts? Thanks guys. Quote
DreamZproject Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 From my limited knowledge, the engine and gearbox are the same, the diff can be fitted (i think there's a little playing around depending if it's a short or long nose???) I'm pretty sure that none of the suspension stuff is the same :/ The brakes can be retrofitted, but don't think its a 100% bolt on mod (small amount of modificaiton). Your best bet would be to get a really rusted out 2+2, but even then, if you have a 2 seater the shocks are slightly different... Please correct my mistakes anyone. Quote
pauly_adams Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 engine, gbox, diff and wheels that is about it nothing else fits Quote
bolt7484 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Any idea if the halfshafts fit, are they CV on all 280zx's forgot to look? I have a s30, 280z so EFI spares would be good for me. Ta Quote
DreamZproject Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Oh did you buy that on ebay recently? I saw that one if so. Efi kit should all be the same (I'm sure there are a couple more emission things on the ZX's. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted March 14, 2014 Administrators Posted March 14, 2014 I know people have fitted 280ZX Turbo CVs to the earlier cars but this requires some modification. Your 280z is almost the same as our later 260z 2 seater's, the main difference being the EFI in your car. Quote
bolt7484 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Have not bought the donor yet. So a non turbo ZX runs the same half shafts as a late S30 car (non CV)?? When did the S30's start running the R200 diff? Are all the diffs interchangeable? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted March 14, 2014 Administrators Posted March 14, 2014 Q. So a non turbo ZX runs the same half shafts as a late S30 car (non CV)?? A. I'm actually not sure what they run, having never climbed under a ZX I can't say. Q. When did the S30's start running the R200 diff? A. 240z's ran the R180, 260z's used the R200 in Australia. (Not sure about 74 year). Q. Are all the diffs interchangeable? A. Since you have a 280z I'd say it should be pretty straight forward to swap an R200 long nose diff in, earlier 240z's are a bit more work due to the fact they had the R180s. Now my question is: Q. Why do you want to swap your diff? Do you want a different ratio or are you looking for an LSD? Quote
bolt7484 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Thanks, Trying to cover all bases. I would like to get some spares for a rainy day and the ZX donors are low cost. Mine being a 280z coupe has its own compatibility issues re spares. I thought if the drive train on a 280ZX had enough common spares it might be worth stripping one. How many cars do you need honey! One more.. Quote
DreamZproject Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 '74 260's did come with the R180 (unless one was swapped into mine, which i doubt...) Does this mean i would have problems switching to some R200's? Quote
