acf321 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Dare I ask folks.... I'm looking for a 71B short ratio box for my 240Z. I believe these were avail for 240z's and early 260Z's. I'm not after the 'ultra close ratio' but the 'close ratio'. Car needing help is the Brown Hornet... 2nd too short, so am looking for a close ratio box. Any condition considered. Will pay the right money for the right box. I currently have an as new 71B 260Z box. PM me if you have one? Cheers all Adam Quote
dat2kman Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Need to work out first, what box you have now. You say 71b from a 260z, it could??, be the desirable 2.9 first gear gearset. To establish this, with the box IN the car do this, Jack up rear end, nice and high, support with a pair f stands. Release hand brake. Remove all spark plugs. Set timing marker on TDC se ratchet spanner. Put car into FIRST gear.. Get somoene to lie under car, put a single dot paint mark on tailshaft, Using ratchet, rotate engine 3 times to TDC each time, if the paint dot does NOT quite get to the original point, you have a 2.9 first gear. If it takes a further 1/3 of a turn PAST tdc to get to riginal point( the dot) then you have a regular Skyline/240k/later260/280zx/Bluebird etc box. And you will very mch enjoy an early 71b box from an early 260z. The usual giveaway to dentify these is the filler plug s on the RHS f the box, it will have a normal slip yoke type output, not a flange Lurch was selling an ex Les Collins fully rebuilt 71b box, iirc it was the 2.9 first gear jobbie. acf321 Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 To be clear, I am looking for the box with the 2.9 ratio first gear, as opposed to 3.3. Thanks folks Adam Quote
