Riceburner Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I recently read some info on people pinning the dizzy shaft. Apparently this is done on higher Hp engines as extra insurance to stop the gear from slipping on the shaft and resulting in timing or oil pump issues. It's only a press fit from the factory. My question is has anyone done this and are all the shafts the same length regardless of L20a L24 L26 L28? I had a practice on a spare shaft, drilled a 3mm hole, fitted a high tensile 3mm solid pin and staked the end of the hole on both sides. Would this be sufficient? Quote
dat2kman Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Do you mean " peening" ? This is a method that fires very small fine steel shot/balls onto ketal to stress relieve the surface. It is best on changes of surface faces and in roots. Your instance is, the slot of the drive shaft, and the tang of the distributor shaft. Why? Because the sides of the slot on the driveshaft coming up from the crank, can fracture and break. With a roll pin, in a stress situation, ie gearbox selectors, to fit a second smaller roll pin inside the original, or drilled out larger stronger roll pin, is often done on race/rally gearboxes. I have found a pic of the mod someone else has done, I did it the same way as this but pressed in a solid 3mm pin. Do you know if all the 'quills' are the same length? Could I use an L20A quill in an L28 or will it be fractionally shorter? Thanks Quote
