grimlynsan Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Hi Gents, Looks like the New Year is not off to the best of starts... my charge light is staying on! I haven't done any testing but I feel a new alternator may just be on the cards. I've read that I can get away with a cheaper and probably more efficient alternator if I get one from an RB30 VL Commodore (about $50) however it seems some electrical jiggerypokery needs to be done to convert the external/internal regulator doober which is not my strong suit. I figure it will be easier to just get a second hand stock alternator and swap it straight out... I read the FSM and it seems pretty easy even for me! Anyone got a spare alternator that works? I am in Brisbane. Please PM me if you do! Thanks, Lee Quote
grimlynsan Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Furthermore, I just phoned the wreckers and they said that RB30 (VLs) were fitted with 3 different types of alternator and do I know which one I need... I have searched this issue and find conflicting information. As a 260z owner, it can be confusing as so much info is related specifically to 240z. This is compounded by US-centric info (why I love AUSZCAR!) and my general lack of mechanical understanding. I know the RB30 came in other cars, as did the L series. So my assumption is that (assuming you muck around with the wiring and use a diode(?) and remove the external regulator *ANY* alternator that fits on an L series or RB series block should fit (you may have to file a bit off a bracket or drill a hole). Can someone more knowledgeable please correct me or shed further light on alternator options (upgrade/replacement/it'll work) for late model 260Z owners (I'll repost any 'once and for all clarifications' in the "Alternative Alternators" Sticky, which actually remains fairly useless (no offence!) as it only contains speculation. True or false?: "assuming you muck around with the wiring and use a diode/selenoid [insert appropriate term] and remove the external regulator, *ANY* alternator that fits on an L series or RB series block will fit and work." Thank you Zedders, Lee Quote
Scoota G Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 My Cleveland powered zed has a VS V8 Alternator that wires up to the stock loom. If you drill the L Series bracket all the way through and trim it a little it fits. You'll need the wiring loom from the VS which i bought new for $12 and also you'll have to change over the pulley and get the right sized fan belt. 80 amp alternator or you can get the 120 amp birdcage alternator. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Brand-Bew-Holden-Calais-Commodore-VS-V8-alternator-12V-120A-/271210994602?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f256f5baa&_uhb=1 My other zed has a holden 80 amp alternator that had to have a diode installed.
