Fairlady Z Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Ok had a bit of a problem with 280zx today. I fixed the intake that was dogs breakfast. Also rerouted two spark plug leads so it neater. Hit the start key it started and shortly after will backfire consistantly. Yep the two plugs i retouted must have been swapped. Started figuring out which one goes where and had cyl 1 going to 6 etc. got me puzzled so reaired it correctly and hit the ignition nothing. Wont start. Spent an hour or so checking it out. But no success. Even called raa racq nrma etc... Got membership so may as well use it. As expected useless. Than started swapping bits and pieces like air flow , distributor, leads, ecu but same issue. Seemed like the timing was way out. So reset the ignition timing and still no go. Anyway i did figure it out and got the car running. Just wondering how stupid i was and loosing 3/4 days sorting it out or somone would have figured in 10sec. Can somone suggest what was the issue? Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 18, 2013 Moderators Posted November 18, 2013 Sounds like you may have the firing order mixed up. If you are not sure, get the engine #1 cylinder to TDC (inlet and ex cam lobes to form a "V" on number 1) and the rotor should point to number 1 cylinder then clockwise around the cap to 1 5 3 6 2 4. Then grab a timing light for the details. Quote
Fairlady Z Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 Did all that dimitri besides removing the valve cover couldnt be bothered plus not leaking oil so didnt want to pull it appart. But this did point in right direction only when i replaced the dizzy. And was like WTF. Tdc and at cyl 1 location. Pulled the original dizzy out and fitted spare Look at pic Its 180 out whack. The original dizzy was rebuild by a moron and had it 180 out. Should have known when i noticed even just cyl 1 going to 6 that it was 180 out of whack. Just took me freaking ages to realise it. Anyway engine started first hit with the key with replaced dizzy. Bottom shaft and rotor arm was out. So pulled it appart reset it all and refitted to car and worked perfectly Freaking bush mechanics. Just pissed didnt realise it earlier signs were all there. Anyway took the targas off and went for a drive. Drives well now still to check the timing but where i placed it seems to go lot better than before. Looks ok from a distance must say. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 19, 2013 Moderators Posted November 19, 2013 Don't you love that when it happens... top pic is right; rotor should point to radiator. Good to hear it's all go... Quote
