nizm0zed Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 ok, So as some may know im putting a RB in my zed, anyone who has ever looked at the conversion knows you need to do something about the sump. So, options as i see them. 1. Modify the standard sump, eg cut the hump off and spin it around. I have done this on a CA18 engine before, its not so easy. Sumps never seem to be symmetrical and they can warp easily, ensuring a long lasting stain on your driveway. 2. Custom built sump, bought from a workshop. RIPS in NZ do them, along with quite a few other workshops around oz and the rest of the world. From what i have seen, to buy one 'off the shelf' you could easily drop $500-700 but, having said that, they are usually good looking alloy units with extra capacity and baffles built in. 3. Factory option. 200ZR - Rare and hard to find, apparently NLA from nissan (Although i haven't tried to contact Nissan US or JP to verify) The 200ZR also looks like it may have a small oil bowl? limiting oil capacity? What about the GQ Patrol with RB30 engine. Its got the hump on the right end and bolts straight up to any RB block. I have heard that they are a little hard to find though... How deep is the hump? Is it too low down past the crossmember? It could still be a good contender for reasonably easy modifications to fit into the zed? Im finding it a little difficult to find a pic of one. Reason i ask is because i have a line on one for $125, I dont know whether to buy it and mod it, or put the money towards a custom built one? Suggestions? advice? opinions? Thanks. Quote
zedevan Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 If you're planning on running a motor that would benefit from the money dropped into a custom one, I'd go that path as the 200zr sumps are still reasonably expensive (I have one with the correct pickup for sale for $500, and plan to hold onto it if it doesn't sell for that in case I go down that path), but are still just a stock sump with a baffle plate. If modifying a patrol sump won't cost you much to do then I had read its an easy way to get a sump with a higher capacity of oil relatively cheap - as shouldn't rb30 sumps nearly be free? Quote
garvice Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Which rb motor? 26 has a pickup further forward of the others. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 11, 2013 Moderators Posted April 11, 2013 The GQ Patrol sump steps down twice and after installation is only around 1-2" from touching the ground. The effort in modifying it, you might as well modify the original sump. ZR sump is quick and easy if you don't plan to race or if you want to race, go custom. Quote
nizm0zed Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Which rb motor? 26 has a pickup further forward of the others. RB25. im not too concerned with modifying a pickup to suit, thats an easy bit But yea, your right, the RB26 pickup is in a very different spot. Quote
drzoidberg Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 i put a rb 20 det in my 280 a few years ago, i got a patrol sump and cut that deep section of the sump square off and just welded steel plate over the missing section and modified the pick up, worked a treat and no leaks. Rb is out now with l28 back in, so I could be persuaded to sell it or swap for 280/holden 5ltr parts i need Quote
nizm0zed Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 well, i have a 5l bag of manure that i'd be willing to swap, could easliy spray a GM logo on the side fore you what did you do for you engine mounts? I have seen the CX racing mounts (no thanks, look weak as) and the McKinney Motorsports mounts (expensive, but yea ok) There is also the Castlemaine kit, but i havent enquired about the price yet... Finding a set of ZG mounts is 99% out of the question and my R31 mounts seem to sit too high. (maybe i'll mod them? Im also trying to work out what i need to do with the gearbox? Im not using the DET gearbox as i dont need to worry about a massive torque output (25DE N/A engine), so the RB20 box i have should be fine? At which point it seems to fit nicely between the standard tunnel mount with a lightly modded crossmember. Quote
THOMA Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 What about a dry sump setup? Has anyone fitted one and do you get enough clearance? Quote
nizm0zed Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 Interdasing theory. im pretty sure a drysump setup would have enough clearance, but in reality your talking about $3k for a drysump setup, as compared to $700 (Generalised price) for a modded sump that fits... Its a bit of an extreme.... Quote
drzoidberg Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 leave poor mister 308 alone, i think most of this country was conceived within a few feet of one haha. I used castlemaine mounts, they didnt fit. I should have sent them back back but i didn't, however, all i needed to do was weld another flange to them as the engine sat to far back hitting the fire wall. They were heaps expensive 400 and something dollaridoos. It was an expensive route to take in the end but it worked. If your handy with a welder and are willing to fiddle around try making them yourself. I can help out with the dimensions. The gearbox i used was the det box, it fit fine but i needed to fiddle around with the mountings i think just swapping them over from r32 to 280(auto) something simple. There is a z wrecker in adelaide (adelaide z cars) i spoke to one of them after i had done it as they had a 260 that they were dropping a rb25det into, bloke told me they bought 200zr sump, pick up and mounts from japan for 500 clams. he seemed pretty impressed with the price for some reason. BobsYourUncle Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 The rb20 box should be fine behind an rb25de (I'm going to be running an rb20det box behind a stock rb25det). Talk to Nathan (nat0_240_chevZ) about mounts. He made mine, and I'm more than happy with them. Here's a link - http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,7573 I've also just posted a few photos of engine placement in my build thread - http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,10008.msg131567.html#msg131567 I'm using a 200ZR sump (zedevan's one for $500 is probably a pretty good buy). Otherwise I think Nathan was talking about making sumps too, or there's a guy on hybridz that does them (Pat, but he's US based). Quote
Wayne G Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I picked up a 200rz sump, pick up and dip stick for a steal, along with the mounts and other sundry items when I worked in a wrecking yard that imported from Japan. I collected mounts from a variety of RB powered vehicles and ended up using the R33 n/a mounts, shortening them and plating the bottom, and then sitting them on the square Nissan mounts/isolators(possibly R32?) resulting in the engine in a good spot, with gear stick in middle of factory hole. However, the gearbox is a combination of RB, VG and CA housings and internals. I am yet to mod the AC bracket, specifically the belt tensioner, to clear the front sway bar. Quote
