d3c0y Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Hey Guys, Up for sale is my Crane HI-6 CDI multi-spark ignition with rev limiter and Crane LX-91 high energy coil to suit. I had this unit installed in my car for around 3 years and has never missed a beat. This thing is perfect for replacing/upgrading your points ignition with an electronic system without having to change distributors (Stock points distributors have a better ignition curve than the stock electronic dizzies). This unit will give your car more power, better throttle response and easier starting compared to the stock points set up even on a stock motor (that's not just a sales pitch!). Here is a link to the information sheet on the Crane website: http://www.cranecams.com/390-391.pdf Looking for $200 for the lot and i can help explain how to wire it up but its very easy! Quote
d3c0y Posted April 6, 2013 Author Posted April 6, 2013 Oh and i'm selling it because my PMC motor came with a special new distributor so i no longer need this ignition. Quote
dat2kman Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 What happens to the signal to the CDI unot when engine rpm is high enough to cause points bounce? How does the distributor curve ( weights setting and all in advance timing) alter the signal going in and thus coming out from the cdi, if you use stock dizzy? With my old fashioned ways ( circa the 1950's) i always had the points type dizzys bob weights altered, spring tangs bent, and vaxpcuum advance locked off, to give me, say, all timing in, at eg34deg at 3500 engine rpm. There is/was a guy in atarragindi, ( older than Methuselah, who can re-do dizzys! Quote
d3c0y Posted April 7, 2013 Author Posted April 7, 2013 Even though you have absolutely no intention of buying it Jason, i'll humor you... What happens to the signal to the CDI unot when engine rpm is high enough to cause points bounce? Ultimately if you are getting points bounce, it's not going to be optimal setup and you should upgrade trigger system to something better. If you are revving your engine that hard, you probably don't have a stock engine and should have sprung for an appropriately upgraded distributor. Since the ignition system doesn't rely on transmitting the full ignition voltage through the points anymore you could run a larger gap which would help stave off bouncing if you're a tight ass. For those playing at home, points bounce is nothing to do with the CDI box. How does the distributor curve (weights setting and all in advance timing) alter the signal going in and thus coming out from the cdi, if you use stock dizzy? It doesn't (i thought you would know that ). I also thought you would know that 240Z distributors have a better ignition curve than the electronic distributors, again regardless of the actual ignition module you use. With my old fashioned ways ( circa the 1950's) i always had the points type dizzys bob weights altered, spring tangs bent, and vaxpcuum advance locked off, to give me, say, all timing in, at eg34deg at 3500 engine rpm. There is/was a guy in Tarragindi, ( older than Methuselah, who can re-do dizzys!) Anyone experiencing issues with points bounce should probably talk to that guy too. I reckon he would know how to fix it or could build you an appropriate distributor for your modified engine! Quote
dat2kman Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Didnt know about the early 240 dizzy! I'm used to the zx dizzy, have to run that in the Gp S car! Little simple trick to stop points bounce at higher rpm, was to jam a bit of stiff foam sponge in behind the point spring, that stopped it,Only issue was the rubbing block wore a bit quicker, not much though, next was valve bounce, that's a different topic! This thing from Jake sounds pretty goid, i do know the spark, at spark plug gives you one hell of a bloody great zap! Quote
