Pedro Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Ok. I accidentally replaced the oil in my 5 speed (260z coupe) box with 'GL-5' gear oil which i now know is a NONO with the 260z box (something to do with the fact that it destroys the brass syncros. The good news is its only been driven once or twice with it in there I realise now that i need to use Redline MT-90 which is GL-4 grade gear oil. The box has barely been used since its rebuilt in about 2001. What is the best course of action, i dont want remnants of the GL-5 to be left in the box. Should I: 1) run the car to operating temp 2) drop the GL-5 oil 3) put in GL-4 4) play on - [everything is then dandy?] Or do i need to do a 'flush' change between 2) and 3) with some sort of oil to get out GL-5 remnants out? I found this but it doesn't specify the right oil to use as a 'flush' oil. Advices please! Quote
dat2kman Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 No Drain the GL5 Fill with 4 Run it to hot, Drain, Refill with fresh 4 If synchos get a bit tight/noisy, a mix of 2/3 of GL4 and 1/2 of auto trans fluid, will help deglaze and unstick. Then go to a quality box oil, Redline Lightweight Shockpoof is good Quote
Pedro Posted March 10, 2013 Author Posted March 10, 2013 cheers, I am assuming you mean 'Fill with 4' in the first instance as 'fill with cheaper GL4' (cheaper than GL4 redline). What is this shockproof stuff? i was just going to use Redline MT-90 which is what i thought everyone used. Is the shockproof stuff better? It is a road zed. Quote
