I remember taking out the front sway bar and made access a bit easier, just mark your steering rack position with a paint pen then unbolt change bushes and bolt back up, not the biggest job too do wait until you need to do the rear of the car that is the fun part ;D

They are not always a good fit. In particular, the rack casting may have quite a corner radius which requires the need to remove some material from the edge of the bore on the new bushings. The size of the rhombus shape of the casting can also vary.

I also have some vague recollection that the casting sizes varied as the steering racks changes between 240 and 260 models - bit of a dog's breakfast. Worn 240 racks were possibly replaced with 260 racks. I believe they only supply bushings for 260z racks now so if you have a 240 rack you may have fitting issues.

The previous owner had made a hash it and left a large gap and I got halfway through the exercise and decided to wait until next I had the engine out (LS1) to finish it off.

Yeah i had the same problem as PeterAllen in terms of the bushings not fitting well. I bought both a 240z and 280z(us) and neither of them fitted my 71' rack. 260z/280z wont work at all as its about half an inch too wide and the circumference of the bush itself is too large and doesnt drip the rack. 240z one was marginally wider and required shaving here and there to make fit. I used Energy brand.

To remove rack all i done was unbolt the rack bushing caps from the side with wheels removed, unbolt and hammer out tie rod end, unbolt steering shaft inside engine bay and slid the entire rack out through the drivers side wheel well all the while snaking it around the sway bar and suspension....it can be done.

The bolts on the steering rack brackets have locking nuts on them. 12mm spanner, remove from engine bay side first before you jack it up.

If you have access to an engine crane, i found that unbolting the engine mounts and lifting the motor up a few inches made everything a whole lot easier.

I put these in the V8 Zed today, the ones from Bursons (superpro i think) are a much better fit. Removing the steering rod will allow you to move the rack around more. Use the grease supplied to make them slide in easier.
