  1. Hey there, I am restarting a project after some considerable delay, and the first thing on the agenda is body work. Most rust has been removed and repaired, though existing damage to quarter needs to be looked at among others. Sandblasting is the treatment Im going for to remove paint and surface rust that has inevitably come up, but currently still unsure as to what post-blast primer is going to go on. Options are: A: POR-15 Local paint shop recommends it...and luckily enough stocks it on the shelf Looks good promising, but I personally have no experience with it. B:Powder coating A place around the corner that does zinc powdering on a whole shell in grey, black or red for $450. Its sprayed in the oven, then baked. Supposedly gives a very hard coat and penetrates the steel as a good preventative to rust. Almost like what manufacturers do these days. C: Epoxy Ol' trusty, and seems a favourite for those in the industry, so they say. Questions for those in the know: Before blasting, is it worth while doing rust repairs, and metal finishing? Ideally my preference would be to smooth body by hand rather than fill, albeit within reason. If using POR 15 system for the underbody area, does it get used in combination with other systems? What, if any, are the compatibility issues with this? Can it be applied to the whole shell?? Touch ups? Can it be welded over? Powder coating zinc? With this treatment was told repairs are to be done as per norm, then once welded, just touch up with zinc pressure pack. Epoxy. Once set does it get in the way of the bonding of metal wiping? Is it weld through or are there other products for that? Is it a reliable rust barrier/preventative? If not, what can be applied over as a preventative for areas such as rockers, wheel wells, gutters, cowls, window frames? etc. And in what sequence ie: blast, primer, protection, topcoat, more protection? Any advice is appreciated, as this is not my my area of expertise. Any alternatives not mentioned? Thanks in advance.
  2. Heya! Keen long term datsun enthusiast. My bro and i are sharing the workload on a 76 260z 2 seater, which has been in his ownership the better part of a decade. It is currently disassembled down to a shell, and hopefully 2013 is the year the resistance of inertia on inactivity will cease. *fingers crossed* The general plan is to have a streetable sr20 engineered swap. More on this later. Looking forward to sharing ideas with you all. Darius
  3. Wow, this is an unexpected amount of replys! Yeah sorry bud, I leave home early and get home late, so my breather time "now" is when all is caught up. Haha yeah the topic needed "maturing", to get a good answer as iv had no luck at all on other forums...seem like most people arn't interested in turning Well a brief intro is in order I guess; Sitting in my garage, the better part of a decade is a 260z 2 seater, fully stripped...a roadworth repair taken to the next level hehe. Together with my bro, we have plans of doing: s/blast, a SR20det conversion, with suspension transplant (maybe?) and all the fabrication ourselves and im game to finish the bodys imperfections too, but ill see about painting it. This is a first for us both but im gathering a wealth of knowledge to make a calculated decision on all aspects of it. Being a boilermaker myself, the fabrication side wont be a problem. Next to it is a Mazda Rx4 hardtop, that has seen too many years in the rain. Plans for that is Cosmo 13B-RE, rust repair/respray, and set it up for tough street maybe even tarmac rally. The reason for this post is a need to revamp the handling and robustness of the front end on the Rx4 (conversion to rack and pinion, wishbone?), and to do a 9 inch swap with minimal mods, with proven yet simple methods to stop movement of the rear and aid traction. All this should go ahead in the new year...Datsun first. Fellas thanks for the directions, but holy sh!t, $205 for a new copy of "tune to win". time to start saving.
  4. As the topics states, are there any reliable and modern/recent books regarding modifying, tuning and engineering of suspension that are out there that we can use as a reliable reference tool? The book "How to make your car handle" by Fred Puhn is from 1987, and im surmising that it is already outdated, has anyone read it? Any other options? Thanks in advance.
