Beautifully Restored 1971 Datsun 240Z in gorgeous factory ordered 919 Yellow

Up for sale is a nut and bolt, rotisserie restored early 1971 production Datsun 240Z (VIN: HS30….859) in factory ordered 919 yellow. This is an Australian delivered Z with rare matching numbers and an extensively documented restoration work performed over a period of 5 years.

Prior to my acquisition, this vehicle was owned by a single Z enthusiast for almost 39 years. The car won many shows, including 1991 Concourse (Combined Z Clubs of NSW), taking on 1st place as “The Best Original 240Z”. (trophy included)

The car was subsequently acquired by me in 2015 as an addition to my Z collection.

Since 2016 the car has undergone a complete strip down and restoration due to everything starting to look tired at the time. All mechanicals' have been rebuilt or replaced with new items, where possible, genuine Nissan parts have been used.

Below are the key restoration highlights:

  •           Original matching number L24 engine rebuild to factory specifications, by James Flett of MIA Performance Engines in Sydney. (early 2017)
  •           Gearbox and differential overhaul by Stewart Wilkins Motorsport (2017)
  •           All worn out suspension components including shock absorbers replaced. Original springs tested and adjusted to original height specifications.
  •           Mid 2017, the body was stripped down to bare metal for a complete rotisserie restoration. All work extensively documented, there was very little or no rust in all important and typically problematic areas on on some of these models, a testimony to an excellent care taking and garaging by the previous owner.
  •           Restored dashboard, no cracks.
  •           Interior restored with seats, door trims and other plastic components left in an original condition.
  •           Original frequency seeking AM radio, tool set, blue car jack and yellow original Nissan wheel chocks.
  •           Original steering wheel and road wheels with manufacturers stamps and steel hub caps as sold when new as well as a set of period correct magnesium wheels which came with the car.

The car is by no means perfect and as I’m moving to Europe, the following would need to be addressed:

  •           Tachometer not working. The tacho itself is not faulty (can be demonstrated), however the connection is not in the right place, so that needs to be addressed.
  •           Fuel gauge working intermittently (due to connection at the fuel sender terminal)
  •           Glove box fitment is not up to my standard. The plastic door, sitting flash, but not perfect.
  •           Rear bar has an ever so slight indentation right in the middle part. Its seen only on an extreme angle, size less than 1c coin.
  •           General detailing of chrome bumpers (no rust) and chrome rear light trims would add few more points on my score sheet.
  •           Driver’s seat would benefit from foam or supporting belt replacement due to sagging. (up to $500 incl labor) - https://www.datsun-garage.com/products/molded-foam-inserts-1970-78-240z-260z-280z
  •           Firewall has a sound proofing material on the inside, I was considering carpet over that area, however, it’s not covered by the old and ugly looking original Datsun firewall insulation board, so I’m leaving that call to the next owner. (up to $500 incl installation) - https://www.zeddsaver.com/collections/all/products/datsun-240z-firewall-insulation-kit
  •          Tune-up after run-in period. (run-in oil filled)
  •          Window regulators are tight. Further lubrication/adjustment required.
  •          Series 1 mirrors available for the guards, however, have not installed them as I’m leaving that call to the next owner (either do a door mirror or a guard bullet mirrors as it was originally on the car).

These are the major things that I know of and for an extremely fussy picker there may be few more, small faults, but in the large, the car presents itself as per photos and is an excellent example of unmodified, manual Datsun 240Z, with a low VIN and a matching engine number, extremely rare in Australia at this price point.

With restoration and original purchase costs well exceeding the advertised price, I believe this vehicle presents an excellent opportunity to purchase an appreciating asset with 99% of work done.

Since the completion of the restoration the car drove less than 100 km’s, mainly due to me living abroad over the last couple of years. Since I’m now permanently moving overseas, this rarely offered 1971 Datsun 240Z is now available for sale.

A fresh NSW Blue Slip can be provided on purchase. Reserved NSW black and white number plates (OLD-240) also available, at an additional cost.
