Does it seem unusual for an ignition coil to get hot?

I'm having trouble getting spark (on a mid 80s corolla) and have swapped two other coils in to check but they all seem to get quite warm when 12 v is applied to them.

Have done the usual resistance checks on them and know that at they are working units when pulled from other car.

When you do the math with 12v across a 2 or so ohm coil you end up drawing 6 amps or so. But this sounds pretty power hungry to me. Am I missing something?

Are they made to run directly with 12V or used with a ballast resistor. If so, they should have "12V" stamped underneath the case on the bottom. If not, I'd run it with a resistor.

Yep it's 12v Dimitri.

Electronic ignition.

Turns out they only overheat if you try to redesign the circuit and connect the negative pole of coil to chassis gnd ::) Ooops

should learn how things work before I screw around with them.
