Oil Pressure/temp guage reading intermittent

My  oil pressure/ temp guage on my 260z reads intermittent. Some times they both read correct. Have put a light to guage which lights up for about 1 second at a time then goes out.When globe lights up then oil pressure and temp guage move up in unison.Have checked connection at sender units.Both guages moves together when driving along, going up then down.Bizzare.

Sounds like a break in the wire or a poor connection on the sender connections. Ground them both and make sure the gauge reads full deflection and then play with the wire. If it goes down, there might be a break in the wire further away from the connector.

Since it's two separate senders I wouldn't start there.

 

What I would look at is what is common between the two gauges, that being the ground and the switched ignition. I would inspect the plug for that pair of gauges, it might be melted, corroded or just old and failing. There might be a break in the main harness, that the ignition and ground split off.

A wire's conductor could be broken. this is especially common in older vehicles or vehicles that use thin gauge wiring that is not supported well.

 

To feed all the items that need to have an ignition or even a ground supply, the wire will be tapped into or split, to allow many devices to be fed from one source. Sometimes these joints can be the source of failure, or where the conductor is broken.

Reason I start with that is when some people remove plugs, they tend to pull on the wire rather than the plug itself causing a break in the conductors a bit before the plug. Could be a corroded connections on the fusible links, anywhere really.

I would agree, if the symtoms were different, as in affecting on one gauge, or at different times, but since they work in "unison," I can say with 99% sureness that it's a power issue, maybe even internal in the gauge...

 

That's something else to check, especially if the power supply seems to stay solid, check the connections inside the gauge. I've had more than a few pieces of electronics come back to life or start work properly after going over the solder connections and re-flowing them.
