Rhino73z Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Hi Zedders, Would someone be able to confirm if: a) Durapro (GSDJ380D) head gasket is the correct gasket for a L28 engine (F54 block with a P90 head). Pic below shows the difference between the old gasket which was fitted and the new one supplied by the workshop which reconditioned the head. They advised me the old one is a generic gasket and the new is a factory copy....is this correct? b) I should enlarge the water channel indicated with the arrow on the new gasket, as it is smaller than that of the block and the head? Thanks in advance for any advice which will mitigate any potential disasters before I bolt the new had down. Simon R Quote
Scoota G Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I would say you can do it now at the risk of damaging a brand new gasket or over time that hole would be opened up by the flow of water. Quote
Wayne G Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I am not an L series expert however it is normal for head gaskets to act as restrictors in water galleries near the water pump. This aides in a more even flow to all of the cylinders. Without it the water ends to take the easiest path and the rear cylinder runs significantly hotter than the front cylinder. Having said that, a good wad punch and piece of wood will make the hole the same size, but I would leave it. On a side note, the piston in number one is showing signs of oil wash(it is clean of carbon on the exhaust side of the piston crown). If you are not going to refresh the bottom end make sure you clean and remove the raised carbon deposits from the crowns. Quote
peter mc Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 the new gasket is the generic copy .... the jap gaskets have a large hole . but the small hole wont hurt on a stock low comp motor Quote
Rhino73z Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks for the info guys. I'll punch out the small hole to match the block and head as it doesn't sound like it is there to generate any additonal pressure and more flow shouldn't hurt. Should I also punch out any additonal holes to match the block and head not in this new gasket? For example missing holes either side of the head bolts on the spark plug side (top of pic). Quote
