DatPilot Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Hey all, Just sold off the MR30 Hatch and all (most) of the turbo goodies, gone to my brother in QLD for a few years (will buy it back later) New project: HR30 Skyline Coupe Has the wheazy L20et Factory compression is 7.5:1 and they run around 6psi, not all that exciting, infact my N/A L24e was more fun! Im thinking on what options I have, as this is a project that can take 6 months or more if needed. Ideas so far: Open up the L20et, get a higher compression head on,(plus ARP bolts) Notch the bore to suit bigger valves, Turbo cam from SWR/Isky/Kelford. Get a rebuilt RB20det turbo (or stock R34 Neo OP6), and a new exhaust/dump. Plus a good intercooler that will fit without butchering everything (like an XR6 Turbo intercooler) 2.25 inch cooler piping Add my Wolf 3dv4x ECU (pretty good for what it is) Add some decent new/reco injectors, like GTR 444cc, and a billet fuel rail (Pallnet on hybrid-z) Fuel pump upgrade to bosch (to suit) Or all of the above to an L24e (from R30 Skyline) Or install on L28e with sump conversion (if there are any left....) SO any ideas, comments, combos etc will be appreciated. Still havent looked to see if the L20et block can accomodate bigger internals either.... Quote
peter mc Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 yer there no a power house i think it would be a good to raise the comp up to 9.1 and run a vl distributor and run a turbo with a .63 rear housing. a garret 380hp will wake it up no end. a small cooler and a 3in exh will make 180kw a Friend of mine has this combo in a skyline and love it Quote
DatPilot Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 Cheers for that, it already has the 'optical CAS' type dissy so I hope that will handle the Wolf ECU. would a .63 rear be too big (like the AiResearch T04e I just sold....) Quote
ozconnection Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I've owned two L20AET engines. Although they may appear the same, the two have very different internals. One, marked with an "M" on the block has very light duty internals, probably designed to reduce internal friction and rev even better with a 135mm con rod. This engine would probably not be worth trying to get lots of power from since the internals would need to be upgraded first. The other has standard beefy internals like the rest of the L family. It runs a 133mm rod which is the same rod as the 9mm 240Z rod. Still with a great rod to stroke ratio, it has an awesome rev potential with some work. Mine spun easily to 7.5K rpm......completely standard spec. The E30 and Y70 heads are great starting points. The chambers are beautiful peanut closed chamber jobbies and the ports are small and allow for considerable porting. My idea would be to essentially leave the ports the same size but use a larger cam profile. Why?, the small ports keep throttle response up, especially since each pot is small and torque isn't something the L20 has surplus of. Keeps the snap in the trigger! The turbo pistons are very dished...try and get something a bit flatter to boost the CR. Look at the ACL website or at Yahoo Japan for options. Or your favourite piston manufacturer. You could use an L24 or L26/8 crank but the rod ratio isn't as good. CR would be up but that lovely rev ability will be reduced. The ports would need to be made bigger and the comp ratio may be too high for a boosted engine so what's the point? Just get a bigger engine. I'm a fan of the little spinner. If you don't want it, I'll have it! Quote
peter mc Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 turbo selections is the key to make them sing the garret gt28series with .63 rear housing is well suited for small 2L engines dont change the cam the extra comp will make it more drive frindly down low and you can tune around the detanation with the wolf with the right diff ratio it will be fun to drive . DatPilot Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 Cheers for that, Will post up some pics over the weekend. I had a few good turbos but sold them off to get this project car. I do have a highflowed FJ20 turbo I was thinking of pulling out from under the house, from memory its from the series 1 FJ20 non intercooled. Will keep an eye out on ebay and whatnot for a gt28 too. Billet make some nice units, but very pricy! Quote
. Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Can someone provide a simple explanation of any advantages of a "small" intercooler over a "Large" intercooler.....Does it give less lag? Quote
DatPilot Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 I think it all comes back to the intercooler design. A china ebay intercooler may have more pressure drop across the core, as well as not being thermally efficient, then an HKS Drag intercooler could be smaller than the china one, and the HKS has LESS pressure drop, and is MORE thermally efficient. I had an XR6 intercooler on a mates Rb30et, made 190kw. Then 'upgraded' to a big ebay one, made 180kw and laggy as.... Quote

Took it for a test today, very sluggish, takes ages for boost to build, probably needs a BIG service before I start breaking things. Looks like the injectors are olive green, as in the RB30e ones, and there is no Resistor pack too. More good news though, 2.5 inch exhaust all through, with CAT, and smallish cannon (to be replaced with twin tip Lukey) Sound is SOOOO good. Like a cranky RB30et. Quote

Should of checked it all over before test run! Sparkplugs were about 1/4 in resulting in a lack of compression Dissy had a few leads not pugged in. There were 4 hose not sealing, lotsof leaks. plus a few ther silly things. Spent maybe an hour fixin it all up and PRESTO... instant fun!!!!! This thing is GREAT fun to drive. spools up to 6 psi and from 4t gear its amazing the torque range, pulls up hills no worries. Its no rocket, but sure is fun. Will be looking at a rebuilt S15 T28 ball bearing turbo this week , see if its a good replacement. Quote
DatPilot Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Been tinkering a bit more. Pulled the turbo off to inspect. Surprisingly in good nic for something so old. Seriously it's one of the first turbo engines in production! Body is getting in better shape too. Will get some pic to help with the panel prep questions I have. Quote
zzzzed Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 check this out.. Its the engine i bought from john Sirpent and then sold http://delcohacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=998 Quote
DatPilot Posted May 24, 2011 Author Posted May 24, 2011 OK I think Ive figured out photo inserting via photobucket. Pics showing areas needing attention (rust? corrosion?) Quote
aidannn Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 did you end up getting this engine from scott? sounds like a nice project Quote
DatPilot Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 I still havent been able to get through to him, but have run out of work and money so its just as well.... Quote
DatPilot Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 I know its a long shot, But can pistons be replaced with the engine still in the car??? I have very limited room, and no access to an engine crane or stand.... I am thinking to see if some less-dished (or flat-tops) can be slotted in (fresh rings etc) Plus a mod to the link pin to make it free-floating Quote
