Need to bend gear shifter after conversion to manual

Hi everyone,

 

I recently had my auto replaced with a 5speed. Sadly, the gear stick now hits the centre console.

I read somewhere that I can oxy torch the stick and pop two bends in it to have it good, but unsure just how I'd go about this.

 

Is the gear shifter easy to remove?

Hi, what type of 5 speed is it? eg from a L series or RB? I swapped my auto for a RB30 box and had the same problem as you.  Thomas (nuclear_z) from this forum fixed it for me. He made a cut from the front side, bent it back and filled the "<" with a weld. Took 2 mins.

 

If it is a L series have a look at your stick, is it straight or has a kink? If it is straight get a kinked one from the wreckers and might be simple fix. Mike

It's from an L series. Seems straight to me. (at least what I can see sticking out of the floor).

Whatever is easiest works for me.

 

I basically just need a little clearance so I can fit my gear boot. Then all things going well I should be able to finally get my car registered.

I also have a kinked one  somewhere in the shed. Just had a quick look, found 3 120Y sticks but not the zed one.

 

Will have a better look on the weekend. Have to clear out all the 120Y stuff

I can't believe it was in that thread. From memory I thought that was just a list of boxs. I've been searching every datsun forum I could think of for a week. Looked at every other gearbox thread here. Shouldn't have trusted my dodgy memory. Thanks again Loui.
