xs180sx Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Hi, I am currently searching for information on this site and others, but thought i might be able to get a more direct answer from some one. I have a 240Z and have found a 280z 1982 auto. Would the diff, shafts and brakes be useful for a conversion. Q1. I am pretty sure these come with a R200, probably not LSD, but thought i could get a new after market LSD centre. Can any one confirm this and weather it would be possible to put an LSD centre into a non LSD? Q2. If the R200 is useful then i would assume the CV type half shafts could be used for a conversion as well. Q2. Would the brakes be useful for a rear disk conversion? I know there is a lot of information on this but just want to be sure. I can get the diff, shafts and brakes for about $300 bucks. Thanks Quote
. Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Normally the Auto was an R180 with CVs but anything is possible. Either way (R180 or R200) yes they are all useful for conversions. The CV Shaft may be useful but not without modifying the 240 hubs to suit the bolt pattern etc. The series 2 rear brakes are a good basic conversion. Just did mine 6 months back. If its a series 1 don't bother with the rear brakes. The front brakes are not worth the trouble, there are plenty of better options around for the front of a 240/260 Quote
herrods Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Hi, for more information, search posts about r200 and my username, I have asked this question recently and got some great help. $300 is pretty cheap, but if its an open diff, and an un-useable set of shafts and brakes its an expensive paperweight. r200 i found in the original diff, can take the aftermarket LSD centres as well. you are going to be forced to spend the same amount for the aftermarket centre, so why throw away a perfectly ood shell you already have (I assume) Brakes, I bought MSA type one kit www.thezstore.com.au they are expensive, but they stop the car very very .... very well, and its a no mess no fuss meccano set bolt together. couple that with some springs/shocks (i used tokico illumina - damper adjustables) and you get a car thats about 1.5" lower than standard, with great turning, stopping and (with the diff) drivability. Mine has never let me down with these parts, and im about .5 to 1 seconds slower than an S15 with 240kw (approx) around eastern creek, on a carby motor! turning and brakinh power... for the win Quote
xs180sx Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 Ok, I'm going to check wether its an R200 buy measuring the bottom 2 rear cover bolt spacings apparently on a R180 it's 80mm and R200 it's 90mm. If there is any other way to please let me know e.g. buy the numbers cast into the bottom of the diff. I don't think it will be a R200 due to it's an auto but it just looks different to the 180 in my Z. Galderdi whats the difference between the series 1 and 2 brakes e.g. vented or not, different calipers. Just look at Lurchs 280zx brake conversion tutorial ignor the last question. Thanks for the help Quote
. Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 The rotor is the same in each. The series 1 caliper is ugly as hell with a big brace around it. Worse part is the pad size is tiny (about the size of a credit card). The series 2 caliper is the more traditional style with a larger pad. To do the conversion you will need a set of the brakets. You can either hunt around the guys on the forum or you would get a set from the USA pretty easy. Quote
